NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder says recently-deceased Leon Vance’s agent daughter, Kayla, will make a return in the season’s finale.
After her father’s death, she was transferred to San Diego.
“These guys, they move around all the time, so I would chalk it off to that,” Binder told Parade. “You can be assigned some place for six months and then you’re sent back, especially if you don’t have a family.”
He continued, “When we introduced her, and then we made the move to San Diego, we didn’t want to invest time in that character, and it seemed like she also needed to go off into the world a little bit and not just be here under her dad, and she did. DC’s where the NCIS HQ is, and I think she just came home. It hasn’t been established, but she could have been all over in this time period. She could have been in Rota, Spain for all we know.”
The episode, titled “Brothers and Sisters,” came out on May 12. It explores family dynamics within NCIS. Agent Timothy McGee recently learned he has an adult son, Mateo Garcia, who may follow in his dad’s footsteps.
Sean Murray, who plays McGee, recently talked about the episode with TV Insider.
“McGee has always prided himself on being a great father, so now that Mateo is in his life, he’s trying to make up for lost time,” Murray told TV Insider. “He may not get it the first time around but he keeps trying to find that connection to build a relationship.”
Diona Reasonover, who plays forensic scientist Kasie Hines, hinted that the finale will hold a surprise for McGee.
She told Us Weekly, “One of our leaders, Mr. Timothy McGee, is in for a big surprise at the end of the season.” He’ll have “his relationship and his heart tested in a way that we are not going to see coming.”
When McGee met Mateo, his son told him he didn’t need a father.
“You have to have all sorts of feelings about your father that’s not there for the first 20 years of your life, and I think even in the best-case circumstance, you don’t know what you didn’t have, and so you’d say, ‘I did fine, I don’t need a father,’” Binder explained. “Or if you’re a little angry about it, you’re like, ‘I don’t need a father!’ I think those are the feelings that are going to be natural to anyone.”
If you haven’t seen the finale yet, you’re in for a little treat — there’s a massive cliffhanger.
