Sold-out tours, popular stand-up specials, and an upcoming comedy movie, THE BREADWINNER, highlight Nate Bargatze’s status as one of the biggest comedians today. His family-friendly material and commitment to his faith set him apart. Here are five moments when Bargatze clearly prioritized his faith.

ATTENDING CHURCH

Bargatze has always been open about his strong Christian faith, speaking about how it has influenced both his work and his life.

In a 2025 interview with Esquire, Bargatze called faith “a good thing to be around,” adding that it “makes you feel grounded.” The comedian also shared that he attends church “as much as I can” when he’s home from touring.

CLEAN COMEDY

While many comedians prefer to tell adult jokes, Bargatze has always been a clean comedian — and for a very good reason!

“[My Christian upbringing] always played into how I did comedy,” he told Fox News. “I was going to be clean from the beginning. There were times that you could see people, I don’t know, getting political or getting dirty … and they would move, and they could pass you career-wise at that moment. And so it was just trusting that I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing. It was hard to do sometimes, but just to stick to it. And now I’m seeing how it’s paid off, and so it’s been great.”

‘SECOND TO GOD’

Working in the entertainment industry can lead to an inflated ego, but for Bargatze, his faith keeps him grounded.

“[As a comedian], I am second,” he said during an episode of The New York Times’ THE INTERVIEW podcast. “Second to God, second to your family, second to the audience. You kind of live to serve. It’s very much a calling in that aspect.”

Bargatze added, “It’s just constant. Constantly having to work on it. Constantly reminding myself to be out of it and make sure that this life is not about me.”

TRUSTING IN FAITH

When Bargatze first began working as a comedian, he shared that he was a little surprised to meet so many people who were not religious. However, this just caused him to stand stronger in his faith.

“A lot of people that I was around weren’t Christians and didn’t grow up in the church or anything,” he told Relevant Magazine in 2019. “Sometimes guys can go away from that, but it just made me get more into it, because I just thought, ‘Why do you think you’re right?’ I’ve always said I trust my parents more than I trust anybody else I ever met.”

STAYING TRUE TO HIMSELF

For Bargatze, his commitment to clean comedy is as much about staying true to his upbringing as it is providing entertainment for the whole family.

“It’s how I grew up,” he told Fox News. “I grew up that way. I come from a Christian family and Southern Christian, so I wasn’t allowed to watch anything, which I talk about in the special. And so growing up and only watching clean comedians, it was just how I was going to be. And it would feel forced if I was not.”
