Christian singer-songwriter Cory Asbury almost walked away from making faith-based music, but some words from Forrest Frank convinced him to stick around.

“For the past 5 years I’ve been running from the church and worship ministry (more on that later) after tasting the goodness of God in my 20s,” Asbury wrote in a recent Instagram post. “By my 30s, I was an established son of the house. I knew my place and still demanded my inheritance just to run off and waste it on other, lesser things.”

The artist had been planning a pivot to country music, running away from the world of Christian music.

Asbury shared that his “running” was “tearing apart my brothers and sisters that were still int he Father’s house,” adding that he was “still doing Saul’s work — persecuting the church, supposing I had the moral high ground even though I was chest deep in my own pig sty.”

“But God is good,” he continued. “And the rebuke of my brother (Forrest [Frank]) gained heaven another soul.”

Asbury and Frank became friends and collaborators after Asbury wrote a parody of Frank’s “Lemonade,” which Frank took offense to.

In an apology video, Asbury addressed Frank — “I got a pretty sobering reality check today. @hiforrest, you’re right, there really is no seatbelt on social media. I hopped on a trend without thinking, and I’m genuinely sorry for that. But I’m also hopeful because I know God doesn’t waste moments like these. He can take even our missteps and use them to redirect us, teaching us how to walk in grace and move forward with more wisdom and love.”

The pair have since appeared onstage together, and Frank inspired Asbury to come back to faith-based music.

“[God] held me in His arms and reminded me of His unconditional love. There’s no shadow He won’t light up. No wall He won’t kick down. Coming after me,” Asbury wrote in his Instagram post. “I am The One. Thank you, Jesus.”

Asbury is now set to release a new song, “Outsing the Angels,” on May 22.

In an Instagram clip sharing an excerpt from the song, Asbury sings, “We may not outsing the angels // but at least we’re gonna try // Let ‘em hear our shouts from heaven // as we lift your name up high.”

Asbury’s fans are glad Frank pointed him back towards making Christian music and can’t wait to hear his new songs!
