On-screen SPY KIDS siblings Alexa PenaVega and Daryl Sabara recently had a reunion, and the duo say they’ll be bro and sis “forever.”
Sabara told Parade, “We’re family, you know? We’re brother and sister forever, and the only person in my life who knows what I went through is her and vice versa.”
PenaVega agreed: “Yeah, not a lot of people understand what a special bond that we have, but even outside of that, the whole movie is based off of family and unity, so it’s so cool that we are still such a family unit 25 years later.”
Now that the two have their own families, they sometimes spend time together.
Each of their children who are old enough to watch their SPY KIDS movies has watched them.
“I feel like they’re just now getting into it,” PenaVega said of her children. “My boys, I showed it to them when [they were] younger, and unfortunately they wanted SHARK BOY AND LAVA GIRL over SPY KIDS, which, I was like, ‘Cool. Thanks, guys.’ But now they love SPY KIDS.”
Sabara’s 5-year-old son is a big fan.
“He’s kind of just in disbelief, like he’s watching the screen and he’s looking at me, and I’m with him. I’m like, ‘Yeah, I don’t know who that is either.’ But, yeah, it’s so fun to share with them,” he said.
The SPY KIDS movie was inducted into the Texas Hall of Fame for the movie’s 25th anniversary this year. There was a complete set with props from the movies, and the actors even got to reenact a brief scene or two.
Sabara and PenaVega recently volunteered at Salvation Army summer camp. They participated in several SPY KIDS-themed activities with the children, like zip-lining and rock-climbing.
PenaVega shared, “I love Salvation Army. I have been volunteering with them and working with them for years and years and years. Even when I was little, we would do a lot of volunteer work with Salvation Army. So, to be an adult now and bring my children along, it’s just been a really beautiful experience.”
PenaVega encourages others to donate, too — if not their money, then their time. Another charity she supports is World Vision.
“They do beyond what we could even imagine. They give all around the world, right here in local communities as well,” she said.
Her mother always inspired her to give back, and she wants to do the same with her children.
She said, “We’re partnered with multiple organizations and just locally and worldwide. So we try to take our kids with us, even after big disasters, we’ll take them with us to help do cleanup and to help talk to families in need and serve.”
Decades after saving the world together on screen, PenaVega and Sabara continue to prove that the family-centered themes in SPY KIDS live on through their bond and commitment to serving others.
