The ending of THE CAKE EATERS excuses the adultery between Easy and Marg, as well as the affair between Georgia and Beagle. Guy and Stephanie also have an adulterous rendezvous in one scene. The director’s statement for the movie talks a lot about love, but the movie’s pagan definition of that word has nothing to do with the idea of love in God’s Word, much less with God’s idea about the love between a husband and his wife. THE CAKE EATERS is a low budget independent movie that promotes adultery and a 17-year-old terminally ill girl seducing a 20-year-old guy so she can lose her virginity.
This obnoxious premise begins with older brother Guy, a musician, returning to his family’s rural homestead too late for his invalid mother’s funeral. Guy’s 20-year-old brother Beagle still lives at home with their father, Easy, who runs the local butcher shop.
As the story develops, viewers learn that Beagle was the main caregiver for the dying mother in the last years of her life. They also learn that Easy has been having a 20-year adulterous affair with Marg, the eccentric grandmother of Georgia, a terminally ill 17-year-old with a muscular disease.
Georgia picks Beagle as the one with whom she wants to lose her virginity before she dies, and Beagle decides to comply. Meanwhile, Guy learns that his old flame, Stephanie, has moved on with her life and started her own family.
