Al Roker Is ‘Breaking All the Rules’ as a Grandpa

By Movieguide® Contributor

TODAY show weatherman Al Rocker became a “Pop Pop” last year, and he couldn’t be more excited for his new role.

“I’m going to do everything I didn’t do as a parent with my grandchildren,” he said. “I am breaking all the rules.”

Roker is grandpa to Sky Clara, who was born to his daughter Courtney Roker Laga and her husband, Wesley Laga, in July last year.

“This kid’s going to be on sugar overload. She’s going to get whatever she wants. It’s going to be fantastic,” Roker joked.

Being a grandparent “outranks everything,” according to Roker, even the fact that he doesn’t have to follow the rules “because then I leave.”

“It’s like, ‘Okay, she’s all revved up. Here you go. Bye. Got to go. Pop Pop’s got a date with a ghost,'” he said.

“It’s funny, too, because I remember my mother — Deborah would come to me and say, ‘You’ve got to talk to your mother. She’s giving the kids Yodels and Ring Dings and all that.’ I said, ‘I’m not talking to her. If you want to talk to her, good luck,'” he added.

“But she’s a grandparent, that outranks everything,” Roker continued. “So as long as there’s nothing to do with giving them a car when they can’t drive or anything. I think all bets are off when it comes to grandparents.”

Roker shared a post a week ago with him and Sky on the streets of New York City. Roker is seen smiling from ear to ear, and Sky is completely captivated by her grandpa.

“My little Sky and me on a #vehiclefree Park Avenue during the #summerstreets program here in NYC,” he wrote.

Movieguide® previously reported on Roker’s first Father’s Day as a grandfather:

“The best part of Father’s Day this year is that I’m a grandfather,” Roker told TODAY. “It’s pure joy. There’s no responsibility, other than you want them to be safe and happy. I don’t have to teach her anything.”

“We sit. We talk,” Roker continued, explaining the things he likes to do with his granddaughter. “We just got the baby life preserver. We’re going out on the pontoon boat.”

“I just had this block set that was Leila’s and Nick’s later. I had this guy sand them down, clean them up,” Roker added, describing a gift he recently gave. “This past weekend she was playing with them. It was like: The circle remains unbroken.
