BLUE BLOODS Star Recalls ‘Emotional’ Final Moment on Set

BLUE BLOODS Star Recalls ‘Emotional’ Final Moment on Set

By Movieguide® Contributor

Filming the BLUE BLOODS series finale was an emotional moment for star Donnie Wahlberg.

“We were all walking this real delicate tightrope during the finale, knowing that it was the last episode and feeling very emotional each day,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “We definitely went to work every day knowing it was the last episode and tried to hold back the tears and the emotion, and the audience will probably do the same.”

Wahlberg continued, “I think when we finished filming is what I’ll remember most. We all just kind of sat there for a long time, and I think everyone was hesitating to say something to say goodbye because A, nobody wanted to, and B, everyone knew once somebody starts talking, it’s a wrap.”

The actor shared that co-star Tom Selleck recited a poem, something he frequently did for the cast and crew, which made Wahlberg even more emotional.

“The first day we ever shot was the dinner scene, right? I didn’t have time then to be in awe of Tom Selleck or to think, ‘Wow, when I was a little kid, if you told me I would work with Tom Selleck for 14 years — or ever — it would be more than I could ever have dreamed of.’ And now here I am, closing out 14 years with him, and I allowed myself to think about that while he was talking,” Wahlberg said. “I started crying and didn’t stop for a few hours.”

Wahlberg recently revealed that he took a few mementos from the set, including something very recognizable.

“I took my two Danny Reagan costumes — my blue suit and my dress blues. I put them on mannequins and put them in a Wahlburgers,” he told PEOPLE, referring to his restaurant chain.

Wahlberg added, “I really had no intention of taking anything from the set until I learned that that table and chairs was just sitting in a warehouse somewhere…I’ll set it up where fans can sit at the table and take pictures. And then I’m going to raffle it probably for charity for the DEA, the Detectives Endowment Association, for the Widows and Children’s Fund.”

Wahlberg has also spoken about the possibilities of any BLUE BLOODS spin-offs, telling TV Insider, “I, for me personally, would say whatever happens next, if it’s done with the spirit of BLUE BLOODS and done with the care that we tried to put into BLUE BLOODS every week, it would be something that I would look forward to watching or being a part of either way.”

“I think what I do know is there are millions of people who love this show and want it to continue somehow, some way,” he continued. “And if there’s a way that we can give them some extension of Blue Bloods, then great. I have nothing more to offer than that, but I will be enjoying the final eight episodes with the fans. That’s my priority right now.”
