Christian Singer Says ‘Grace And Mercy’ Of Church Inspired Him To Pursue Music

Christian singer Rhett Walker says the support of his church during a teen pregnancy is what inspired him to become a musician.

“We’ve been married for 20 years this year,” Walker told Crosswalk Headlines, speaking about his wife April.  “We were a teenage pregnancy at 17, and I watched the church rally around us, which led to me getting saved. And I was like, man, if I can share my story and it resonates the same way the church rallied around me as a teenager …that’s what I want to do. So I don’t write songs for radio to play it. I hope they do. I love it when they do. [But] I write songs off life-lived and lessons learned and hope to help somebody along.”

The Grammy-nominated singer explained that showing grace and love can change people’s lives the way his was changed.

“You never know what anybody’s walking through,” he said. “We’ve all had grace and mercy in our own life, so let’s do our best to extend that any way we can. And there’s times you gotta call sin out and be like, ‘Hey, let’s hold each other accountable.’ But if we don’t lead with grace and mercy, then we don’t need to be in the conversation.”

Walker and April recently celebrated their 20th anniversary.

“Teenage pregnancy to 20 years married today!” he wrote under a photo of the couple. “The whole world doubted but God got us! Here’s to many more with ya baby!”

Walker’s most recent musical project is a song paying tribute to his friend Ben, who has ALS. The pair wrote the song together, along with Ben’s brother Todd.

“My buddy Ben Sturgell has ALS,” Walker told fans on Facebook. “He brought a song to me, and we finished it together with his brother! 1, I said yes to honor his music and 2, I want people to stream it. 100% of the proceeds go to him and his son. ALS SUCKS!!”

Grammy-nominated artist Rhett Walker is sharing the inspirations behind his latest album, Days That We Dreamed Of.

“My first record came out in 2012 and that was my testimony,” he told the Christian Post, explaining that that album explored topics like this turbulent adolescence to his girlfriend April’s unexpected pregnancy when the couple were just 17 years old.

Today, the couple have been married for over 20 years and share four children.

“I was looking at this new record and thinking about me and her, we’ve been married for 20 years this past July 3…and I was like, ‘Man, this, this has been a journey for the past 20 years,’” Walker said. “Just all the things that God’s brought us through, all these potholes that you’ve driven through in life, and you’re like, ‘Man, every time, He’s been faithful and brought me through these things.’”

He continued, “We were sitting on the back porch, and April said, ‘We’re living in the days that we dreamed of.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, like, we really are.’ I don’t think for anybody that it’s just a smooth ride. Life can be hell to walk through, and some go there and back many times…But if you really are looking at your life and what God has set up, man, these are the days that we’ve dreamed of.”
