Christian singer and songwriter Cody Carnes shared the story of how he had to trust God to become a worship leader during an interview with Snapshot Testimony.

When Carnes moved to Dallas and began serving at Gateway Church, he felt God leading him to worship.

“God was like, ‘I’m opening doors over here, and I really want you to walk through these doors of worship leading and serving the church,’ and I was pretty unsure,” he said. “I just felt, you know, at that time…it was funny, the main reason I was unsure was I just felt like I wasn’t ever going to be able to write a worship song.”

Despite his uncertainty, Carnes believed God was calling him to write a worship song.

“I felt so strong that God was telling me to do it,” he said. Carnes explained how he had to let go of some other jobs he was involved in and trusted God to lead him until one day a song came to him.

“I woke up and just had this little chorus idea for a worship song. And so, I like remember kind of getting ready for the day, and I was actually getting ready to go lead at church that weekend…and I was writing this song you know my phone…I showed them, and they’re like, ‘Man, that’s really good, like, why don’t you throw that into the set today?’”

Carnes played his song for the congregation and was touched by the response.

“I remember leading it and then just seeing people respond. It was like this, really kind of this powerful moment. And I just thought, ‘Wow, like, that was really cool.’ And I learned that, you know, God will often ask you to do something, and he asks you to be obedient, step into something…But he wants us to take that step of faith,” he added.

Carnes also shared what his goals are when it comes to writing worship music today.

“Just trying to write something that that ministers to the Lord and edifies the church, you know. That’s the two main goals.”

Today, Carnes’ music has been influential throughout the world, and he has also won multiple awards. Opry reported, “In 2020, he released his studio album, Run To The Father, which earned him his first GRAMMY Award nomination. He also received GRAMMY nominations for ‘The Blessing’ and the album The Blessing (Live) for the 63rd and 64th Awards.”

He recently toured in the UK with his wife Kari Jobe.

“My goodness. Big Church Festival..??? we loved worshipping with these beautiful people in the UK last night,” the couple posted.

Christian musician Cody Carnes recently opened up about the songwriting process for the chart-topping worship song, “The Blessing.”

“The Blessing,” which you can watch Cody Carnes and his wife, Kari Jobe, perform live below, was released at the start of the pandemic, at a time of uncertainty.

It became an instant classic, reaching the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Christian digital song sales chart. The Blessing stayed in the number one spot for eleven weeks, and the above video currently has 78M views.

“We had actually … [been] already writing for eight hours, and we wrote a different song earlier that day, and we were kind of wrapping up getting ready to go home, and this idea happened,” Carnes told Sadie Robertson Huff during an episode of the WHOA THAT’S GOOD podcast. “So we stayed longer. We stayed till about midnight that night. And it just felt like the glory of God came in the room in a different way all of a sudden. … You do feel like, ‘Okay, this feels really powerful to us in this moment. And we know that God is here.’ But there is such a mystery to it still of you having no idea what a song is going to do.”
