Comedian Details How Faith Transformed His Life: ‘Truly Fulfilled’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Comedian Shayne Smith is sharing his faith journey and urging others to join him.

“I’m making this video because people have noticed that I’ve changed my life a lot,” Smith said in a recent YouTube video. “The last two years of my life have been some of the hardest two years of my life, and yet there’s an undercurrent of joy.”

He shared that, while living in New York and pursuing comedy, he was “moving forward in my worldview towards extreme leftism and progressivism,” living a “wildly hedonistic lifestyle.”

However, even as Smith started enjoying career success and making money, his mental health plummeted.

“I had money, I had fame, I had access to pretty much infinite pleasure,” he said. “And I was miserable.”

Smith explained he started to become “disillusioned with the [progressive] movement,” adding, “I realized at this time, ‘I have to leave this bubble and start living in reality.’”

“I slowly started entertaining ideas and looking into opinions I used to outright dismiss,” he said. “My life started to improve and so did my mental health. I converted [to Catholicism], and Christ was the final piece of my puzzle. I suddenly had a complete moral framework. I had this beautiful community. I had a direction and, most importantly, I had fulfillment. I had love. I had prayer in my life. I was and am truly fulfilled.”

Smith continued, “Moving forward in my life, I plan on prioritizing my faith and my family above everything, including comedy and my career.”

“I made horrible choices, [but] I’ll never give up on being better, no matter what happens, because my Lord and savior won’t give up on me,” he concluded. “So if you don’t know what it feels like to genuinely and truly, with your whole heart, believe you’re loved — I pray and hope that one day you do. It changes you.”

Smith spoke about his conversion to Catholicism to Fox News, saying, “I had an experience where I was compelled to go into a Catholic Church for no reason, and I did not have an education about Catholicism [at the time], so I didn’t really understand the Catholic Church in general. I was discerning Christianity and sort of leaning Protestant. But I stepped into a Catholic Church one afternoon — I finally just gave in to this compulsion — and I had an experience with our heavenly mother [Mary].”

“She reached out and touched me, and I wept the hardest I’ve ever wept,” he continued. “In that moment, a lot of things changed for me. I suddenly just felt like a lot of my issues with women had been healed. And I felt like my relationship with my mother had been healing, and all these other sorts of things happened.”

Smith has been sharing encouraging messages with his followers who might be interested in a similar journey, telling his Instagram followers, “If things are hard and you don’t feel fulfilled. If you’re lost and hurting and you cant seem to get it together you need to change things and I don’t just mean therapy or medication or this kind of thing. Cultivate thoughtfulness and discipline in your everyday life.”

“Be strong. Be deliberate. And honestly be a little silly about it all. If your life is easy. If you’re not suffering. If you don’t feel that you’re working hard I’m telling you that you’re not living correctly. A life well lived is difficult and exhausting but the rewards are immense. Fulfillment and self acceptance are worth it,” he continued. “Love your people, go outside, pursue your passion, give kindness to strangers and your life will be better.”
