DC President Testifies That They Considered Removing Amber Heard from AQUAMAN Sequel

By Movieguide® Staff

Amid the trial between actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, DC President Walter Hamada testified that Warner Bros. studio considered replacing Heard in AQUAMAN 2 due to a lack of chemistry with AQUAMAN lead Jason Mamoa.

Although Heard did receive the role in the AQUAMAN sequel, Hamada said there were concerns over the effort it took to make the duo work well together—even before Heards’ counterclaim against Depp.

“They didn’t have a lot of chemistry together,” Hamada testified. “Editorially they were able to make that relationship work in the first movie, but there was a concern that it took a lot of effort to get there.”

Hamada said that “movie magic” was used to make up for the two actor’s lack of chemistry on screen.

“You know it when you see it, and the chemistry wasn’t there,” he added.

As another round of expert witnesses came to testify in week six of the trial, it is clear that Heard’s involvement in AQUAMAN does not come close to reaching the alleged damages that makeup part of her $100 million counterclaim.

As the trial result looms, it is unclear how Hamada and Warner Bros. will proceed, as the AQUAMAN 2 has yet to release.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of AQUAMAN reads:

AQUAMAN is a fantastical superhero movie centering on the comic book character introduced in the movie JUSTICE LEAGUE. Arthur Curry is half human, half Atlantean. He’s also the rightful heir to the throne of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis, but currently his half-brother Orm reigns as the king. When Orm threatens to wage war against the surface world, Arthur must get involved and claim his right as the King of Atlantis. The people of Atlantis will only follow him, however, if he wields the ancient trident of Atlan, the first king of Atlantis. To get this trident, Aquaman must traverse the world and overcome many dangers.

AQUAMAN is very ambitious and creative, with impressive visuals, creative and bizarre characters and creatures. The movie is helped tremendously by a charismatic, enjoyable performance from Jason Momoa as Aquaman. The movie has some light mythological pagan elements, and a slight environmentalist bent, but the theme promotes moral courage, sacrifice and doing the right thing. There are some allegorical Christian elements in AQUAMAN. Caution is advised for older children due to some foul language and action violence.
