‘God Is Good’: Oral Roberts University to Return to NCAA Tournament

By Movieguide® Staff

March Madness is back, and so is Oral Roberts after a 30-win season.

Ranked as the No. 12-seed, Oral Roberts is set to face off against the Duke Blue Devils in the first round of the tournament.

Oral Roberts’ sixth-year head coach Paul Mills said that while Duke is a tough first-round matchup, he is just thankful to God for the opportunity.

“God is good,” he said. “We are thankful. I’m thankful that I get to coach these guys, and they made shots tonight. I got an incredible group of guys.”

“My job is to empty [my cup] and to make sure that I’m invested and I’ve poured into those guys and loved those guys, and those guys have no doubt,” Mills said in a separate interview. “Like, ‘Not only was he organized and passionate, but he loved us. That dude emptied his cup.’ … It’s my job to empty my cup. I just want to show up every day, love my guys, invest in my guys and empty my cup.”

“We always knew there was a sovereign God who presented opportunities, and it was our job (to speak the Gospel),” Mills told Sports Spectrum. “Matthew tells us, ‘Let your light shine before men, so that they may praise your Father who is in Heaven.’ We just wanted to be light, and if ever we were given the opportunity, we wanted to make sure that glory was given in the right way and to the right Person.”

Movieguide® previously reported:

Oral Roberts University, a Christian college in Oklahoma, were underdogs heading into this year’s NCAA March Madness basketball tournament. However, the No. 15 ranked team broke tournament brackets after upsetting No. 2 Ohio State in the first round and No. 7 Florida in the next.

Back-to-back stunners propelled Oral Roberts to a matchup with Arkansas on March 27. They became only the second No. 15 seed in men’s NCAA tournament history to advance to the Sweet 16….

As ORU prepares for another big game, Coach Paul Mills said that the team is thankful for how far they have made it in the most prominent college basketball tournament in all of the sports.

“[It is] a blessing to coach those guys in that locker room,” Mills said. “It’s a blessing to win. The experience that these guys will have, I don’t mean to come across as if we are content, but I am so happy for those players in that locker room.”
