HGTV Pushes Aside Popular Shows for…Movies?
By Movieguide® Contributor
The go-to hub for home makeovers and real estate adventures is shockingly swapping some of its showtime slots for romance and drama movies.
“The network’s schedule over the weekend included a surprise reshowing of the 2015 Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro movie, THE INTERN,” TV Insider reported on Jan. 6. “Usually, the HGTV Saturday line-up is comprised of reruns of some of the network’s most popular original reality shows, such as MY LOTTERY DREAM HOUSE and FIXER TO FABULOUS.”
Next Saturday, at 1 p.m. ET, THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT will air, and the following Saturday, HGTV will air THE NOTEBOOK. Jan. 25 will feature typical HGTV shows, however.
Reddit’s HGTV fans are not happy with the changes.
“Why the heck are they playing FATHER OF THE BRIDE this afternoon?” one commenter said, referring to Dec. 28. “I’m so confused. I miss the old hgtv shows like CURB APPEAL.”
“Sad. They made all these hosts egotistical millionaires with high demands. But they have not come up with a new show/concept in years,” another said.
“Why???? HGTV is my default channel. Just sat down on a rainy post Christmas day to relax …and FATHER OF THE BRIDE is on. Ugh. I can watch that anywhere. Why must they ruin everything?” another user said.

HGTV hasn’t revealed the reason for the movie swaps yet.
Some Reddit users have speculated the channel doesn’t have enough fresh content because it cancels too many shows.
One person wrote, “Apparently HGTV is in such bad shape they have 2 movies scheduled for this Sat afternoon. FATHER OF THE BRIDE 1 and 2. Nothing against either of those movies but…..really!?!?!? 🤔 Maybe invest in series instead of canceling everything after one season. You may have a bucket of shows to air. 🙄”
House Beautiful shared some theories: “Perhaps the HGTV is trying to ignite inspiration through gorgeous, well-appointed movies. After all, who wouldn’t want to live in a Meyers-made universe or call Allie Hamilton’s dream house their home?”
“Or maybe, it’s the exact opposite. Avid viewers know that HGTV is always inspiring us to make our homes better — whether that’s giving into the open floor plan or revamping our outdated kitchen cabinets,” House Beautiful said. “But maybe, just maybe, a movie break encourages us to take a pause. Instead of picking apart every aspect of their home, we can all take some time to kick back, relax, and the space we’re in? Even if only for a few hours each week. Wouldn’t that be lovely?”
