Sadie Robertson Huff knew she found her soulmate by how her now-husband responded to her trying to break up with him before their marriage.

“Someone asked me the other day when I knew Christian was the one, and I joke that it was actually when I went to break up with him, but it’s actually true,” Sadie told Movieguide® in a recent interview.

“It was the ultimate ‘It’s not you,’” Christian chimed in.

When Sadie went to break up with him, Christian told her to never apologize for what God’s doing in her life.

“It shifted my mind, and then the things he said in that conversation were just so good, but he was really just leading me to God and being confident in my relationship with God, and so find a man who can lead like that and leads you to Jesus,” Sadie said.

Sadie previously told 30A, “I think the idea of ‘finding the one’ can sometimes lead to trying to control the situation too much. I wish I had trusted more in God’s timing instead of trying to force things. Looking back, I can see that it was all part of God’s plan, and I wish I had rested in that more.”

Christian and Sadie are both authors and speakers, and each has a podcast where they talk about following God and share the light of Jesus with others.

On the “Jesus Calling” podcast, Sadie shared that as parents of two, she and Christian don’t always spend time with God alone with a Bible in their lap.

“Space with God doesn’t have to look like one certain way every time, and I think sometimes we put this high expectation on ourselves that it has to be in the morning and it has to be quiet and it has to be worship music,” she said, “and our Bible has to be open…I always think about those times as a date with God, those are the times that we get to actually set the table with the Lord and talk to Him, and it’s dressed up in a pretty way.”

Yet, plenty of other moments can still be intentional time with the Lord, even if that means while driving on the way to work.

“… worshiping Him, praying, that looks like putting my girls to sleep at night, talking to them about who God is,” Sadie said. “I’ll take Honey outside and I’ll say, ‘Look at the stars.’ And she loves the stars. I’ll say, ‘God created those stars. And you know what? That same God that made the stars made you.’”

God has done a lot in the Huffs’ lives, and who would have thought an attempted break-up could lead to a happy and God-honoring marriage?

In the end, it wasn’t a picture-perfect moment that locked in Christian for Sadie; it was knowing that she found a man she could trust with her heart.
