Is Disney Moving Away From Its Liberal Agenda?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Disney has recently enacted a series of changes that reveal it may be moving away from the liberal agenda it has championed for years.
One significant change is the warning that is played at the start of older movies with racist depictions. Starting in 2020, older movies with insensitive depictions would warn viewers of the outdated views represented in the upcoming movies.
“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures,” the warning would read. “These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together. Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”
“This program is presented as originally created and may contain stereotypes or negative depictions,” the new warning reads.
This change comes as the company has faced intense investor pressure to move away from its liberal agenda. Earlier this month, the company made a larger internal change in compliance with these demands, dropping a major DEI program. The program, “Reimagine Tomorrow,” focused on “amplifying underrepresented voices” which it identified as the LGBTQ+ community among others.
Disney is not the only company to overhaul its strategy. Many tech companies have been working to cozy up with President Donald Trump since he was elected president in an attempt to receive favorable treatment. Most notable is Meta, who has removed its fact checking feature from its social media platforms, while CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made comments about making his company more masculine and cutthroat.
