James Gunn Reveals His New Angle on Superman for Upcoming Movie
By Movieguide® Contributor
James Gunn will take Superman in a new direction as he directs his own script for the character’s latest spin-off, SUPERMAN: LEGACY, set to release on July 11, 2025.
The movie marks the beginning of the new DC Universe, headed by Gunn and DC co-chairman and CEO Peter Safran.
Deadline reports that “SUPERMAN: LEGACY tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas.”
“He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned,” it adds.
This new movie comes after DC Studios announced that Henry Cavill would not return as the Man of Steel as Gunn’s story focuses on the character’s early days–“younger than his 40s.”
Movieguide® reported on Cavill’s response at the time:
“I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” he continued. “After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.”
His post concluded, “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
Movieguide® celebrated Cavill’s MAN OF STEEL for its “powerful, redemptive, heroic story.”
For SUPERMAN: LEGACY to succeed, Gunn should focus on the positive values that made previous Superman movies fan favorites.
