Skillet’s John Cooper Talks Telling ‘The Radical Truth’ with Al, Phil Robertson
By Movieguide® Contributor
Skillet frontman John Cooper joined Al and Phil Robertson on the “Unashamed” podcast, where the three discussed what it means to “tell the radical truth” in a culture that rejects Christ.
Al shared that during DUCK DYNASTY’s run, Phil was asked about whether homosexuality is a sin.
Phil “went to the Bible and then, as you know, and everybody in America knows, we were embroiled in this huge controversy because all of a sudden, it’s like the DUCK DYNASTY people believe this, this, this, you know, go through the whole thing because we quoted Scripture, and this is what we believe,” Al said.
“We didn’t set out to be this voice of truth in an entire culture and start taking the abuse that you get from people that don’t believe it, but that’s exactly what happened to us,” he added.
Cooper found himself in a similar situation. He “just wanted to play music.”
“I just wanted to share the love of God with the world through my music,” Cooper said. “I wasn’t looking to be controversial. I am aware that Jesus is controversial, but we were living in a time where you could go play with bands, and they could talk about sex, drugs and rock and roll. I could talk about Jesus with somebody else. We would talk about whatever they wanted to, and all these things were still on the table.”
However, the musician explained how that changed because America has rejected Christ.
“Not just rejected Christ but sees Christianity as the source of all of the problems in the world, and I think that’s the new thing,” Cooper explained. “This country didn’t look at Christianity and say Christianity is evil and oppressive and it makes the world terrible, but that is what’s happening now. So, then the pressure comes, and the world, who really is increasingly loving evil and loving wickedness, they begin to think that they are the good people and that they are the moral people and Jesus is the biggest oppressor of all, and so that pressure came on me.”
Cooper explores this more in his book “Wimpy, Weak, & Woke: How Truth can save America from Utopian Destruction.”
“This book uncovers the philosophies behind utopian dreams that become dystopian nightmares, and presents a positive vision for how we can thrive and flourish,” he told JubileeCast. “The false promises of Man lead to destruction; God’s ways lead to life, and that’s the message I want to share in this book.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Cooper’s faith:
John Cooper explained how he became a Christian and why he risks his career again and again to make the name and teachings of Jesus known.
“I have to give my mom credit because my mom taught me about the Lord. When I was a kid, she would read the Bible to me… when I was one, two and three years old, I would constantly read the Bible. My mom would make us pray together, she’d make us Bible study [and] memorize scripture,” Cooper told Movieguide®. “So I don’t remember a day in my life when I wasn’t memorizing scripture.”
“I came to know Jesus when I was five years old, and I tell that story to encourage moms and dads who may be watching,” he continued. “I have two kids of my own, and what you do matters. Teaching your kids matters a lot. What your kids watch matters. What your kids listen to matters. And so, that’s a big deal.”
