As team USA prepares for the pandemic-delayed Olympics in Tokyo, the 28-time gold medalist swimmer Katie Ledecky is ready to add to her total Olympic medals.
Ledecky qualified to compete in her signature event, the 800 freestyle, and the 200, 400, 800, and 1,500 freestyle. Ledecky will also compete with the rest of the USA swim team in relays.
In the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, Ledeck turned heads as the youngest swimmer to compete on the U.S. Olympic team.
At 15, Ledecky shocked audiences after winning the Olympic gold medal in the Women’s 800-meter freestyle in London. Four years later, Ledecky followed up her significant performance with four Olympic gold medals in Rio.
Despite Ledecky’s success, she is a devoted catholic and credits her Olympic-level success to her faith in God.
“My Catholic faith is very important to me. It always has been and it always will be. It is part of who I am and I feel comfortable practicing my faith,” she told the Catholic Standard.
Ledecky added that she prays before every race.
“I do say a prayer – or two – before any race. The Hail Mary is a beautiful prayer and I find that it calms me,” she added.
Ten teenage women have qualified for the U.S. Olympic swim team, with another possible on the final day Sunday. It’s the most since 1996.
Ledecky, 24, completed her Olympic Trials with her fourth victory in as many events, taking the 800m freestyle in 18:14.62. It’s her signature event, which she won at the 2012 Olympics at age 15, in 8:14.63. She is undefeated since and owns the 23 fastest times in history.
Her time Saturday wasn’t one of those 23, but it’s still faster than any other active woman has swum. She earned her eighth career Olympic Trials win, breaking the female record she shared with Katie Hoff and Tracy Caulkins (Michael Phelps won 16).
“I haven’t been super happy with my times, but I still feel like I’m in a good spot,” Ledecky said, summarizing her week and looking ahead to swimming five or six events in Tokyo when including relays. “I’m not comparing myself to my past.”
