Super Bowl Champion Trey Smith revealed on the “Sports Spectrum Podcast” how he pushed through moments when he wanted to give up.
“I wanted to give up a lot of times,” Smith began. “When they’re telling me you’ve got to go on a medication for six months, and we don’t know if you’ll be able to play. You know, there are a lot of days where I woke up like, ‘Man, I don’t want to do this. I don’t want to go run stadiums and lift all this weight and not even play.'”
“But, you know, ultimately, man, I thought about that promise to my mom — I’m gonna get my degree, I’m gonna play in the NFL. My mom went and wanted me to be a great young man, an honorable young man — I wanted to live my life in a way that would bring honor to her.”
“And for me, a lot of times I had to lean back on my faith in God,” the athlete added.
Smith revealed how his sister in Tennessee and a pastor at a local church helped keep him accountable during the hard times.
“God has this plan for me. But it’s up to me to uphold my end of the bargain,” the Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman added. “And, like you give me all these talents, these abilities, these gifts, I have to go to work every single day. I gotta respond the right way, and ultimately receive my blessing.”
“And for me, I look back on my life, it’s like man, the worst times in my life really built me who I am today — like that really molded me. That really gave me some character. That gave me something that I believe in,” Smith continued.

“I know God has me at the end of the day. I know He loves me. I know I got a chance. So, for me, once again, I look at the turmoil, the tough times and obstacles as an opportunity,” he added.
Throughout the summer, Smith runs football camps. One of his most recent ones occurred in Jackson, Tennessee.
“This year’s camp brought together 300 young athletes for a day full of football, mentorship, and memories. Grateful to give back to the community that raised me and beyond thankful to the incredible sponsors, volunteers, and coaching staff who made it all possible. Can’t wait to run it back next year!” the NFL star wrote in a post on social media.
In another post from 2024, Smith shared a few photos at camp. In one photo, it looks like he is praying with young boys attending.
Smith wrote, “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.”
Even during the hardest time in his football career, Smith leaned on God, the promises he made to his mom and a community of believers to push through. Now, the athlete uses his life as an opportunity to share the Good News.
