LOKI First to Experience the Major Change in Disney+Original Series Releases

By Movieguide® Staff

Friday and TV premieres are historically synonymous with major streamers releasing premiere episodes or starting a new season to an original series like STRANGER THINGS.

However, Disney+ took a different approach to their newest Marvel release, LOKI.

“Wednesdays are the new Fridays, Mark your calendars for new episodes of Marvel Studios’ #Loki, streaming Wednesdays starting June 9 on Disney Plus,” the company said on Twitter.

After LOKI posted the most successful viewership numbers of the three Marvel spinoff series—including WANDAVISION and FALCON AND WINTER SOLDIER—Disney announced that Wednesday releases would become the new norm for their original series.

The Hollywood Reporter reported

The changes will begin in July and affect all global original series. As such, the premiere dates will shift for original series including the animated Monsters, Inc. show Monsters at Work (July 2 to July 7) and live-action comedy Turner & Hooch (July 16 to July 21), among others. (An updated release schedule is below.)

The change means that Disney+ TV series and original films will no longer have to compete with one another for subscribers’ attention. It also moves Disney+ original series away from Netflix, which historically has launched entire seasons of shows on Fridays. Disney+ continues to focus on a weekly release schedule versus Netflix’s binge model.

While Disney+ has not released specific numbers for LOKI, reports prove that their decision to move to Wednesday is paying off.

Deadline reported

While Disney+ hasn’t reported figures on the first episode of Marvel’s Loki, which dropped last Wednesday, Samba TV updated its stats to reflect that the five-day viewership of the show is the best the streaming service has ever seen with 2.5 million U.S. households views.

That figure beats the five-day numbers of the first episode premiere of Disney+/Marvel’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier (1.8M U.S. households) and WandaVision (1.6M). Previously, SambaTV reported that the first day number of Loki was a record for a Disney+ show with 890K U.S. households tuning in.

Movieguide®’s review of the first two episodes of LOKI read

LOKI’s first two episodes are a lot of fun. They’re funny, satirical, whimsical, witty, lively, and playful. Surprisingly, there are even some stimulating philosophical conversations about free will, time and the nature of good and evil. Also, Mobius gets Loki to admit he’s a morally flawed person with a lust for power. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for older children due to four obscenities and one light profanity over 103 minutes and some humanist elements and brief questionable philosophy in the first two LOKI episodes.
