Massive READY PLAYER ONE VR Experience to Release This Year
By Movieguide® Contributor
AI and Metaverse company Futureverse announced it is partnering with Warner Bros. Discovery to bring the vision of READY PLAYER ONE to life later this year.
Futureverse announced the creation of Readyverse Studios, a studio co-founded by Ernest Cline, the story’s author, and Dan Farah, a producer of the 2018 movie adaptation. Readyverse is working to bring the multi-world metaverse depicted in the novel to life.
Part of Movieguide®’s review for READY PLAYER ONE reads:
READY PLAYER ONE is the new science fiction movie by Steven Spielberg from the bestselling book by Earnest Cline. Wade Watts doesn’t have a perfect life in Columbus, Ohio and is very unhappy. So, he hides playing the virtual reality game Oasis, the game Wade and everyone else is obsessed with playing. The game’s creator has put a secret “easter egg” in the game. If someone finds it, they win the creator’s vast fortune and can control the game. Trying to find the secret egg, Wade meets Samantha, who’s also trying to win. Her father was killed by an evil man named Nolan, who also plays the game. If they work together, they can stop Nolan from taking over the world. READY PLAYER ONE is a spectacular, entertaining adventure with a strong plotline and amazing special effects. It has a strong, redemptive moral worldview. To save the world, the hero must learn to love and support others rather than just help himself. READY PLAYER ONE does contain too much unnecessary foul language and some other objectionable elements, so extreme caution is advised.
“The Readyverse will champion the principles of the open metaverse, which are provable digital ownership, community-owned infrastructure, decentralization, security and interoperability,” said Futureverse.
“The future has arrived even more quickly than I imagined,” Cline added. “With Readyverse Studios, we have the opportunity to leverage the revolutionary technology Futureverse has been building for several years to bring to life the best possible version of the metaverse.”
“I’m confident with this team, we have the brightest minds and biggest hearts in place to lead us into the next chapter of our collective future…a future that would make Wade Watts and James Halliday proud,” he continued.
The company hopes that the Readyverse will develop new modes of entertainment that are only possible within the freedom of virtual reality and allow for a more intimate relationship between tech and Hollywood.
“There’s a real problem bridging tech and Hollywood,” said Futureverse co-founder Shara Senderoff. “People come in like vultures and steal everything they created. Having grown up in Hollywood, it was most important for me that we change that. We’re going to be the translators to transition you IP comfortably and safely.”
“Readyverse Studios will offer exciting new metaverse opportunities for Hollywood studios, talent, and brands to create new revenue streams and creative outlets for brand expansion while offering consumers the ability to enjoy the promise of the open metaverse,” Farah added.
While the Readyverse is one of the most promising VR projects to date, time will tell if it can bring life to a technology yet to find its mainstream footing.
Movieguide® previously reported on virtual reality:
The metaverse continues to grow in strange ways.
Soul Machines, a company devoted to making lifelike digital images of people, just launched the Digital Twin.
A Digital Twin is a virtual version of a celebrity that can interact with fans.
The first Digital Twin is an image of golfer Jack Nicklaus. According to Variety, “‘Digital Jack’ can understand users’ words, as well as nonverbal communication cues. He takes that information and delivers unique, personal responses that are consistent with Nicklaus’ knowledge of the sport.”
The technology for these Digital Twins was created by Soul Machines co-founder Mark Sagar, who also helped create the CGI for movies like AVATAR, KING KONG, and SPIDER-MAN 2.
“We let fans personally experience a digital celebrity in a way that very few people get to do in real life,” said the CEO of Soul Machines Greg Cross. “Putting Digital Twins of real celebrities in a digital world makes them available 24/7.”
