NCIS: ORIGINS Casts Kyle Schmid as Young Mike Franks

By Movieguide® Contributor

NCIS: ORIGINS has announced a new cast member.

Kyle Schmid will play the role of Mike Franks in the new sequel drama series.

He’s been acting for a long time and is known “for playing Henry Fitzroy in the Lifetime series BLOODTIES, he went onto take on the role of Henry Durham, in the Syfy Channel series BEING HUMAN and the role of Robert Morehouse in the BBC America series COPPER. Kyle focused on film for a number of years following building leading characters until he landed the role of Alex Caulder in History’s well respected, SIX.”

Franks, an NCIS favorite, is “a proud Texan who all but showers in his cowboy boots and sports a perfectly coiffed mustache that’s as thick as his skin. As NCIS fans know all too well, Franks is a born leader with an unwavering moral compass who’s determined to find justice by any means necessary,” Deadline reported.

Schmid shared the news on his social media.

“I’m absolutely thrilled for this,” Schmid wrote. “Cannot wait to bring this story to life and grateful to Muse Watson for crafting such a dynamic character. Truly wonderful writing and talented cast. Blown away.”

Many of his fans and followers also expressed excitement for his new role.

“Congratulations @iamkyleschmid. You are amazing. It’s a fantastic news 😍👏🎉,” one fan wrote.

“Incredible, Kyle!!!! So so stoked for you! You’re going to kill it! ❤🙌,” another fan commented.

Per Variety, “Set in 1991, NCIS: ORIGINS stars [Austin] Stowell as a young version of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, the special agent played in the original series by Mark Harmon. Narrated by Harmon, the prequel sees Gibbs start his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a ragtag team led by Franks. [Mariel] Molina plays special agent Lala Dominguez.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the new series:

Along with Gibbs, the series will dive into Mike Franks’ and Special Agent Vera Strickland’s stories.

“Narrated by Mark Harmon, NCIS: ORIGINS begins in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS. In the new series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks. (On the mothership series, Franks has been a recurring character played by Muse Watson. Franks was fatally stabbed in Season 8 but continued to appear to Gibbs when he needed a sounding board on hard cases),” Deadline reported.

Harmon is the only confirmed cast member, though he will be returning to the franchise as the series’ narrator, not as Gibbs.
