New Reports Claim Season 19 of NCIS Will Be Mark Harmon’s Last

By Movieguide® Staff

After nearly 20 years of NCIS, season 19 could be Mark Harmon’s final appearance on the CBS show.

Earlier this year, the Hollywood Reporter confirmed that NCIS would receive a season 19 and that Mark Harmon would reprise his role as the series’ titular character as Leroy Jethro Gibbs.

“We haven’t shot a single frame quite yet, but with the addition of Gary Cole and Katrina Law to the cast, this is already shaping up to be one of the best seasons yet. Going into season 19, we are excited to have new characters and stories to tell that adds to and reenergizes the world we’ve come to love over the 400-plus episodes,” showrunner Steven D. Binder said in a statement.

According to TVline, Harmon will only appear in “a few” episodes for the upcoming season.

TV Line reported

Multiple sources confirm to TVLine exclusively that Harmon is slated to appear in a relatively small number of episodes next season. One insider close to the CBS procedural reveals of Harmon’s Season 19 episode count: “It’s going to be in the low single digits.” Another source says the actor will make only “a few” appearances throughout the season.

The final episode of Season 18 also points to a lesser role for Gibbs in the upcoming season, as he appears to be killed in an explosion. However, many believe that Gibbs faked his death.

Movieguide® previously reported on another change to the long-running TV show:

After 18 Seasons of NCIS, the hit crime series cemented itself as a staple on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. However, the most-watched series on CBS and Mark Harmon are moving to a new time slot for the upcoming season.

CBS announced that NCIS will air on Mondays and that Tuesday’s lineup will consist of FBI, FBI: INTERNATIONAL and FBI: MOST WANTED.

The change mirrors NBC’s strategy of showing three dramas from one franchise on the same night.

“The one-night, three-dramas, one-franchise scheduling conducive to frequent crossovers has become a Dick Wolf special, with CBS’ FBI Tuesday mirroring NBC’s One Chicago Wednesday and new Law & Order Thursday, giving the uber producer three consecutive nights across two broadcast networks,” Deadline reported.
