Didn’t get the chance to see PROJECT HAIL MARY in IMAX? Don’t worry; the hit movie returns to the big screen soon.

“[PROJECT HAIL MARY will] “remain a recurring fixture in the coming weeks and months as exhibitors find opportunities to bring it back for audiences in search of the most immersive and theatrical experience,” IMAX announced in a press release, per The Wrap.

PROJECT HAIL MARY follows an astronaut who awakens on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or why he’s in space. As he struggles to recall his mission, the astronaut forges an unlikely friendship with an alien who is also working to save his own planet.

“PROJECT HAIL MARY is an excellent film for which Amazon/MGM ran a brilliant campaign, leaning heavily on the power of IMAX as a global launch platform across production, marketing, and distribution,” Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, said in a press release. “Going back decades to some of our earliest documentaries, there is an enduring connection between IMAX and space, and this film’s stunning depiction of the cosmos stands among the best — it truly demands to be experienced in IMAX.”

The movie has smashed box office records, making over $300 million at the global box office. PROJECT HAIL MARY is now Amazon’s highest-grossing movie since merging with MGM in 2022.

Speaking to Scary Mommy about the movie’s themes, Andy Weir, who wrote the book PROJECT HAIL MARY was based on, explained that it demonstrates his own “inherently optimistic” nature.

“It’s easy to lose sight of how good we are as a people and how positive humanity truly is. It’s easy to lose track of that if you hyper-focus on the extreme examples where we’re not,” he said

Ryan Gosling, the movie’s star, added, “I think that’s what’s so special about this film, and why people are having such an emotional connection to it … it’s like we’ve been so saturated with dystopia in future narratives for the last decade to the point where it feels almost inevitable at this point. Then you have Andy sort of reminding us through his work that human beings are always making the impossible possible. That’s kind of our thing. And he’s reminding us that just what we’re capable of and that the future isn’t something necessarily to be feared, but just rather figure it out.”

Catch PROJECT HAIL MARY in IMAX for a special one-week engagement starting April 17.
