THE CONJURING franchise’s Ed and Lorraine Warren are coming back to your screens in a new prequel movie.

“True news: short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct THE CONJURING prequel,” Borys Kit, a writer for The Hollywood Reporter, posted on X. “This is a go movie for New Line, especially after LAST RITES has now grossed almost half a BILLION dollars ($487M to be more precise).”

The prequel is reportedly in the works at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, with Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg co-writing the script. The pair previously worked on THE NUN II and THE CONJURING: LAST RITES.

THE CONJURING: LAST RITES was released earlier this year and was billed as the final movie in the popular paranormal franchise.

“It is done,” director Michael Chaves told Comicbook.com. “This is the final chapter…that’s why we called it LAST RITES. It’s the last one. There’s no other CONJURING movies. It is absolutely the end.”

Lead actors Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson also commented on the series’ end, with Wilson telling PEOPLE, “We have no idea what they want to do after this.”

Farmiga added, “Far as we know, there’s nothing else that they want from us. The Warrens have reached the end of the road.”

LAST RITES was a hit at the box office, as well as with critics and fans. Movieguide® reviewed LAST RITES positively, praising the movie for its “strong Christian, biblical, pro-family worldview,” as the Warrens use their strong Christian faith to battle demons.

It’s unknown if Farmiga and Wilson will reprise their roles as the Warrens, but as it’s a prequel, fans can expect to see other actors appear as the paranormal investigators.

This isn’t the only CONJURING project in the works. Variety revealed that a series based on the horror movie universe is being developed at HBO Max. The show was first reported to be in development in 2023. There are no plot details at this time, but the series is expected to continue the story established in previous CONJURING movies.

It’s no surprise studios and streamers are unwilling to let THE CONJURING franchise go. It’s the highest-grossing horror movie series in history, spanning nine movies and bringing in a collective $2.7 billion at the box office.

Whether it’s another installment in the franchise or a brand new series, it looks like THE CONJURING’s fans have plenty to look forward to!
