One of the most classic children’s shows of all-time is getting a reboot! THE MUPPET SHOW, originally created by Jim Henson, has returned in its original format but with fresh faces.
The original show ran from 1976 to 1981. Now in 2026, the show will include guest stars such as Sabrina Carpenter and will be produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures. It streams on Disney+.
In addition to the exciting reboot, this year marks THE MUPPET SHOW’s 50th anniversary. Collider reported that the show, “Initially rejected by American networks…found success with British media mogul, Lord Lew Grade, who took a risk in prime-time syndication.”
After finding it hard to get support in the United States, Jim Henson partnered with British producer Lew Grade to launch THE MUPPET SHOW in 1976. It was a comedy variety program that mixed sketches, songs and celebrity guest stars and introduced many new and memorable characters, including Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear and Gonzo. With its humor and wide appeal to both kids and adults, the show became popular around the world and helped make the Muppets international stars.
Movieguide®’s review of 2026’s THE MUPPET SHOW reads, “THE MUPPET SHOW, streaming on Disney+, brings back a storied franchise to television screens and may introduce a whole new generation to the franchise. For lifelong MUPPET SHOW fans, there is plenty of nostalgia and entertainment. The quality is top-notch, as viewers have come to expect from the Muppet’s franchise.”
However, Movieguide® notes that the show is not completely child friendly: “THE MUPPET SHOW reboot contains a light moral worldview about friendship and teamwork. However, it contains some concerning elements. There are various references to drinking and dating relationships, including a couple of references to having an affair.”
There is also “slapstick violence,” “light foul language,” “two instances of the Lord’s name taken in vain” and references to new age practices, so Movieguide® advises caution for young children.
No matter how classic a show is, it is important to always check and make sure woke ideas and inappropriate content hasn’t infiltrated it. Movieguide® is here to help you do just that.
