The TODAY show’s Dylan Dreyer updated followers about what she and her six-year-old son, Calvin, have been up to since his celiac disease diagnosis.
The mom-of-three and her oldest son Calvin cut the starting ribbon at the Beyond Celiac 5K run on Saturday.
“Such a special morning at the @beyondceliac 5K run in Waltham. Calvin and I got to kick off the event,” Dreyer said on Saturday.
Dreyer shared a video of Calvin cutting the ribbon on Instagram and photos of the two of them as they held hands and spoke on stage.
“The support from the community and our family makes it all easier! No matter what you’re going through, find your community…don’t go through anything alone!! Thank you @bast_alice for everything!!” Dreyer said.
According to Beyond Celiac’s website, the 5K race raised $171,752 out of its $225,000 goal to help provide celiac resources and awareness.
Dreyer also spoke at the Beyond Celiac Summit two weeks earlier. She said, “What an honor to speak (vent) at @beyondceliac summit this weekend! Thank you for letting me share my story about Calvin’s celiac diagnosis. I met so many wonderful people and received so many recommendations I can’t wait to try.”
The meteorologist previously had to take time off from the TODAY show when Calvin started having sharp stomach pains and other aches. At first, Dreyer and her husband, Brian Fichera, thought that Calvin would be diagnosed with something more serious than celiac disease.
When they got his diagnosis, they were relieved and immediately changed their lifestyle to make things comfortable for Calvin. Movieguide® reported that Calvin feels a lot happier and healthier now:
“[He] has no more pains, no more headaches, no more stomach aches. He’s just like a regular kid,” Dreyer said of Calvin, 6.
Before his diagnosis, Calvin was experiencing stomach pain almost every day, headaches and earaches, hair loss, and a stomach ulcer.
