UNC Basketball Coach Hubert Davis Declares ‘Jesus is the Reason for All Seasons’

The University of North Carolina men’s basketball head coach, Hubert Davis, wants to be “an example for Christ” as he prepares for UNC’s Sweet Sixteen match-up against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

“Jesus is the reason for all seasons,” he said at recent a press conference. “There was a reason for this season, for the first season, for the second season, and He is the reason for all seasons meaning Jesus is the reason for all seasons. And those reasons are good irregardless of it’s a sunny day or a cloud day, those reasons are good.”

“And the person that I am today, the coach that I am today, was because of the good reasons from year 1 and year 2,” he added. “I really believe that. Last year was a blessing. I am a better person and a better coach because of last year. That’s the way I believe.”

Davis believes God ordained his position as a coach. Movieguide® reported:

“If I’m only coaching basketball, then I’m not doing my job,” he said. “And so, I know that Jesus allowed me to be in this position, and He’s put me in this position to be a light, and that’s what I want to do.”

“The foundation of who I am is my relationship with Jesus,” he said at the Final Four in 2022. “Whether it’s coaching, whether it’s my marriage, whether it’s my three kids, decision-making, everything is filtered through my faith. I can’t do anything without it. It’s not me sharing it. It’s me being me.”

That year, UNC would finish as a runner-up. Although it was an upset, Davis reminded his players of Proverbs 4:25, which says, “Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.”

“Hubert Davis has said he ‘desperately’ wants his players to experience success on the basketball court. But he’s even more eager to ‘be an example for Christ’ and make the most of his God-given ‘opportunity to be in these kids’ lives,'” Church Leaders wrote.

Duke’s head coach of 42 years, Mike Krzyzewski, coached his final game against school rivals UNC and first-year coach Hubert Davis.

The legendary coach, known as Coach K, announced that he would retire at the end of this season.

However, UNC defeated Duke 94-81. The Tar Heels coach and outspoken Christian said that faith is a part of everything he does, even coaching.

“I kept giving them Proverbs 4:25, (paraphrased) keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions,” Davis said in a press conference after the game. “Every day on the practice plan, I put in Proverbs 4:25 and I said, ‘Just focus on the things that we need to focus on, let all that sideshow stuff go on and let’s focus on what we need to do to put ourselves in a position to be successful.’”
