We Are Messenger’s Lead-Singer Discuss New Album, ‘Wholehearted’: ‘Jesus Christ is Still On the Throne’

Lead singer for the Christian band, We Are Messengers, Darren Mulligan, recently explained the inspiration for their new album, ‘Wholehearted,’ and his mission as an Ireland-born singer in the U.S.

Mulligan recently shared his testimony on CBN’s ‘The 700 Club,’ noting that his wife, Hiedi led him to the peace and hope of Christ.

“I fell in love with music when I was seven years old, watching my mom and dad dance in the kitchen listening to Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash,” he recalled. “I realized that music could take you away from your heartache and from your disappointment and as an older teenager, in my 20s, I fell into alcohol dependency, adultery, all kinds of promiscuity. My life kind of fell apart.”

“But a few weeks before I married my wife Heidi she led me to Jesus,” he added.

While Mulligan confessed he was hesitant to continue with music after his conversion, he realized that he had a calling and a message to share with the world.

“We came out here in 2014 and we’ve been here seven years going on eight and it’s been the most beautiful, horrific, wonderful and terrible adventure you could ever have,” he said.

Despite living away from his homeland, Mulligan said that he and his family put their hope and trust in God and his word.

“I try not to have a second-hand experience of Jesus,” he explained. “I don’t rely on podcasts on songs on worship leaders on pastors, they’re beautiful things and they supplement, but my first hand experience of God comes through the scriptures the word of God as revealed by Holy Spirit.”

“Secondarily, I try to have a real good time doing what we do,” he joked. “I make sure that when I’m with people I’m with them. I give them all of me when I’m there, I’m present and when I get to go home to Ireland we just spend our times hiking in the woods just in the mountains and we recharge. We remember why it’s important to be in America, why God has called us to be here and we’re called to be a voice for those that don’t have one. We’re called to call prostitutes and Beggars and thieves and the outcasts to the table of Grace that God has set before us.

“It is the greatest honor of our life to do it. We need rest, we get that, and then we go right back to work because it’s a beautiful thing.”

Mulligan and We Are Messengers recently released a new album called ‘Wholehearted.’ Mulligan hopes that the new album will provide people with the Gospel amid turmoil.

“Everything may seem chaotic and the world may be unfair, there may be terribly nefarious things happening but Jesus Christ is still on the throne. God is still good,” he said.”He is not moved by circumstance and circumstances do not define our response. We are defined by the goodness of God, by his mercy and Grace.”

“This band, we don’t exist so that we could be more famous. We exist so that we could give more of ourselves to others so that they may find hope and love in Christ,” he added. “And you cannot do that by giving part of yourself. You have to be all in, all the way. This band, our families, our wives, our kids, we’re wholehearted about the gospel and we’re wholehearted about you and the people who God loves.”
