Why This Professional Hockey Player Doesn’t Swear

Colorado Avalanche player Josh Manson is breaking his habit of swearing.

“But where I’ve tried to limit, I guess, is just profanity,” Manson said of how he models his faith to his peers on the ice. “I think that a lot of times in hockey, it just goes hand in hand with people swearing at each other and demeaning each other and telling people bad things, and that’s part of the culture. They call it chirping. It’s hockey lingo. There’s chirping, chirping, chirping.”

“I’ve tried to just kind of wipe that out completely,” he continued. “[I try] not to speak with my mouth in any way that’s defaming anybody or trying to cut them down…Just playing my game physically and focusing on that and letting that kinda be the talking of how I want to live [my faith] out on the ice. That’s kind of where I landed with it. I don’t know if it’s right or if it’s perfect, but it’s kind of where I’m at with it right now.”

In 2022, Manson and his team won the Stanley Cup playoffs. Manson was full of emotion, saying, “Worked my whole life to lift this trophy over my head and it did NOT disappoint.”

However, three months prior to lifting that trophy above his head, Manson was traded from the organization he began his career with.

“These past few days have been a whirlwind for myself and my family,” he shared on his social media at the time. “Now that things have settled down a little bit, I wanted to take the time to thank the Anaheim Ducks organization for an amazing 8 years. Since being drafted by them in 2011 and starting my pro career in 2014, I have made many friends and created countless memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.

“I will forever be grateful to them for giving me the opportunity to live out my dream as an NHL player,” Manson continued to write. “I wish everyone in Anaheim nothing but the best moving forward. In saying all of this, I am extremely excited for what the future holds in Colorado and am ready to get to work!!”
