Why This Christian Comedian Writes Hilarious Kids’ Devotionals

Christian comedian Bob Smiley has a heart for parents and kids and for strengthening their faith through humor.
He and Christian musician Matthew West talked about what he hopes families take away from his Adventures of Average Boy kids’ devotional series.
“I’m always looking for anything I can to help parents, you know, have resources too because the whole world is competing for our children,” he told West. “We’ve seen that, and so…that’s why I love doing Clean Comedy because you can bring, you know, your family to it, your kids and stuff.”
“So…we wrote two devotion books, and it’s a funny story, but they have conflict and things that kids deal with, like picking the wrong friends and all that kind of stuff. Then at the end of each chapter, there’s a resolution but then there’s scripture to back up why Average Boy picked that,” he explained.
Smiley’s newest book in the series is titled Average Boy’s Above Average Summer. He told West the synopsis of the story.
“One of his goals is he wants to invite every person in his town to church, and so how he does that over the summer in all different ways, and stuff is pretty interesting. That’s one of his goals is, you know, his pastor is challenging everybody to invite more people to church so he’s like, ‘This summer I’m going to invite everybody in town.’”
Another aspect of the story has to do with a project that Average Boy works on.
“He decides he wants to build a treehouse because, again, just how I grew up, his house backs up to the woods. So, he’s got all this woods in the back, and so he wants to build a giant treehouse with his friends, but there is an animal…out in the woods that’s trying to foil his plans,” Smiley explained.
Fans love his books, and Above Average Summer is no different.
“Just hit #1 on Amazon! Again, thanks to everyone that bought the 4th book in the series. I’m super excited for kids to read this!” he posted on Instagram.
Along with his books, Smiley does stand-up and tours with some of the Christian music industry’s biggest names.
“Bob Smiley has been doing standup comedy for over 20 years. He’s toured with bands such as the Newsboys, Third Day, and Mercy Me… even though his best friend, Toby Mac, tells him not to name drop,” he says on his website.
