8-1/2 WOMEN

What You Need To Know:

Stylistic director Peter Greenaway’s 8-1/2 WOMEN is a semi-pretentious, boring movie about a rich Englishman and his son, who establish a sex harem on their estate in Geneva, Switzerland. After the rich man’s wife, and the son’s mother, dies unexpectedly, the son tries to console his father with a tryst with the son’s Japanese lover. Afterwards, they decide to start collecting a harem of women at their palatial estate. When a woman who has long been pursuing the father comes to live there, the son becomes jealous of the one woman he cannot have. Eventually, all the women leave, and the father dies.

Although this basic story description sounds cohesive, 8-12 WOMEN is constructed in a haphazard fashion. The dialogue is aimless, consisting of rather mundane, silly discussions about sex, happiness and obsession with male private parts. Although most of the sex is implied rather than depicted, the movie is filled with explicit nudity and contains plenty of obscenities and profanities. Hedonism, prostitution, blackmail, and jealousy all play major roles in the story, which includes strong anti-Christian content, such as blasphemy and sexual mockery and humiliation of Roman Catholic nuns
