MUPPET TREASURE ISLAND is another rollicking Muppet adventure which makes fun use of all the Muppet characters. The story follows the outline of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale. Opening at the isolated Benbow Inn, Jim Hawkins, Gonzo and Rizzo attempt to serve the seedy group of Pirates and cutthroats. One customer, Billy Bones, keeps blathering about a hidden treasure. When Billy expires, he gives Jim Captain Flint’s famous treasure map. As pirates destroy the Inn, Jim, Gonzo and Rizzo escape to find Squire Trelawney, played by Fozzy Bear. The Squire grants them one of his ships captained by Mr. Smollett, played by Kermit the Frog, so they can find the treasure. Unbeknownst to our heros, the cook is none other than Long John Silver. Long John’s evil ways are revealed when they arrive at treasure Island. After harrowing adventures, Jim and crew are saved by their wits and the help of a jungle goddess, played by Miss Piggy.
As in many Muppet adventures, this movie contains positive references to prayer, God and the Bible. In fact, it has a stirring, though humorous sermon by Long John Silver condemning blasphemy. There is no real violence, but there are lots of adventure and slapstick comedy. Children will love this friendly adventure which will instruct them in good virtues, teamwork and the value of love.
