What You Need To Know:

OUR KIND OF TRAITOR is a tense spy thriller adapted from an acclaimed novel. In the story, an English professor, Perry, and his wife, Gail, a successful lawyer, get embroiled in negotiations between a gregarious Russian mobster and the British Secret Service. The mobster, Dima, desperately wants his family to get asylum in London from the Russian mafia. He’s offering the Brits information about several powerful British traitors working with the mob to establish a phony bank in London for laundering money. The risks for Perry and Gail escalate. How far will they go to help Dima and his family?

After a slow start, OUR KIND OF TRAITOR picks up as Perry and Gail become enmeshed in the negotiations between Dima and the British Secret Service. The result of this is an edge-of-your-seat suspense movie, with top-notch performances. Even better, OUR KIND OF TRAITOR has a strong moral, patriotic worldview saluting family, doing the right thing and fighting corruption. However, OUR KIND OF TRAITOR contains many “f” words and three lewd scenes that severely limit its audience and that warrant extreme caution.

More Detail:

OUR KIND OF TRAITOR is a tense spy thriller about an English professor and his wife who get caught up in helping a Russian mob accountant overseas seek asylum for his family by giving information about the mob’s new corrupt deal in England to the British authorities. OUR KIND OF TRAITOR is a superb spy movie that extols family and doing the right thing, but it contains many “f” words and three lewd scenes that severely limit its audience and that warrant extreme caution.

The movie opens with the Russian mob executing a young woman and her two parents on their way home after her father signs a document with the new man taking over the mob, nicknamed The Prince. Cut to Marrakech where an English professor, Perry, is making love to his wife, Gail, in their hotel room. For some reason, Gail gets upset and gets out of the bed. Later, the movie reveals Gail is still upset with Perry for having a brief affair with one of his students.

That night, Perry and Gail are having dinner at an expensive restaurant where some loud Russian men are having a little party. A successful lawyer, Gail leaves to finish some legal paperwork at their hotel room. The apparent leader of the Russian men partying, a gregarious man named Dima, invites Perry to have a drink and attend a bigger party. At the bigger party, Perry wanders around and spies a large Russian man apparently trying to rape a woman who’s clearly upset. Perry intervenes and has to be saved from getting a beating by Dima. Impressed by Perry’s guts, Dima informs Perry that the attempted rapist was a Russian hitman. He invites Perry to play tennis with him the next morning and meet his family.

Early the next day, Gail goes to the tennis courts and meets Perry, Dima and Dima’s wife, their three children and two little orphaned twin girls Dima’s family has adopted. Later, he invites Perry and Gail to come to a large party he’s having on Perry and Gail’s last day in Marrakech. They reluctantly agree.

At the party, Dima takes Perry aside. He informs Perry he’s been an accountant for the Russian mob for many years. Dima says he’s being forced to sign over control of the mob’s accounts to The Prince, after which he expects the Prince to have him and his family killed. He informs Perry that the twin girls are the daughters of the man murdered in the movie’s first scene.

Dima pleads with Perry to take a special thumb drive of corrupt English leaders making a special deal with the new bank that the Prince is establishing in London to launder money for the Russian mobsters. He asks Perry to be the go-between for him with the British Secret Service. He wants to offer the Brits all the account numbers for the payoffs to the British traitors if they will grant asylum and protection to him and his family.

Perry and Gail reluctantly agree, but the simple job turns out to be much more than anyone expected. The risks for Perry and Gail soon escalate. How far will they go to help Dima and his family?

After a slow beginning, OUR KIND OF TRAITOR picks up quickly as Perry and Gail become further enmeshed in the negotiations between Dima and the British Secret Service guy handling the negotiations. One of the problems is that the British spy handling the case has been unable to get approval for doing it, because his bosses are very suspicious of Dima, who, after all, is a Russian mobster. Dima, however, appears to be strictly on the up and up. He truly seems to care about getting his family and the twins safely to London.

The result of all this is an edge-of-your-seat suspense film, with top-notch performances. Although adapted from a novel by acclaimed writer John le Carré, who’s recent work has become tinged with leftist politics, OUR KIND OF TRAITOR has a strong moral, patriotic worldview saluting family, doing the right thing, courage, standing up to bullies, and fighting corruption. Despite his flaws, the protagonist displays a strong positive character always ready to do the right thing. This positive trait inspires his wife to follow him.

Sadly, though, the gregarious family man, Dima, frequently spouts a lot of salty language, including a liberal use of the “f” word. OUR KIND OF TRAITOR also has a couple lewd scenes (the bedroom scene between the protagonist and his wife and the scene where Perry stops the rapist), plus a men’s locker room scene where Dima and a couple other fellows are shown totally naked. This content will limit the movie’s appeal to a broader audience. It also warrants extreme caution for OUR KIND OF TRAITOR.
