THAT THING YOU DO, written and directed by Tom Hanks, documents the rise of fictional band, The Wonders, from Erie, Pennsylvania. It shows the excitement and challenges of being in a band when rock was young. Guy Patterson quits long hours at the family business and joins Jimmy, Lenny and the nameless bass player to form The Wonders. Winning a local talent contest, they become popular around Erie. They meet manager Mr. White played by Tom Hanks who represents Play-Tone records. With Mr. White’s savvy skills, The Wonders rises to the top of the charts and gain a TV appearance in Hollywood. Will they go on to greater success or will they be a one-hit Wonder?
Tom Hanks does not disappoint. His affable style, affection for the period and wily sense-of-humor pervade this exceptionally well-produced movie. The greatest theme of this movie is the struggle between creative talent and possessive power-hungry recording companies. The worldview of this movie is mildly Christian. Church going, serving the church and not working on Sunday are featured. THAT THING YOU DO will probably be a hit, both the movie and the soundtrack. It is only marred by a few obscenities and profanities. Otherwise, THAT THING YOU DO does so well!
