THE ABYSS–SPECIAL EDITION is a revised “director’s cut” edition of the 1989 underwater action/fantasy which, through 25 minutes of restored footage, adds some character development and a stronger ending to the original. The film weaves together three story lines. One involves the emergency exploration of a sunken nuclear submarine which rests precariously on the edge of an underwater trench. A group of Navy Seals has been given permission to utilize some underwater oil rig workers and their equipment as the base as they search for survivors in the sub’s hull. A second plot line features a huge, glimmering, non-human civilization which resides in the the trench. They experience a number of “close encounters” with the humans complete with amazing special effects. The final and the most important plot line, tells the story of the reconciliation of a marriage. The estranged couple is forced to work together in close proximity on the rig, and, as they battle various obstacles and accidents, their love for each other is rekindled.

The SPECIAL EDITION adds entertaining and insightful scenes involving supporting characters, enhancing another subtext of teamwork and mutual respect. Some added footage explains the underwater civilization. This element of the film’s fantasy enhances the human story lines. The language at times is intense; there is brief nudity; and, some scenes of drowning are definitely too intense for younger teenagers.
