When a trip to the doctor’s office reveals that his girlfriend is pregnant by someone else, Greg decides to pursue Billie, the female urologist who examines him. They begin dating, soon marry and settle into a house in Columbia, S.C.
Billie gets pregnant and her mother, Evelyn, comes to help the young couple through the ordeal. The film tries to lampoon a first-time pregnancy, but there’s not one laugh as Greg and Evelyn push or pull Billie up steep streets, dash to the hospital in pajamas, or demonstrate labor breathing techniques in the delivery room.
The baby is born, named Chloe, then it’s more of the same with late night feedings, slapstick humor and other trials and tribulations associated with first-time parenting. At one point, Evelyn baptizes Chloe in the backyard baby pool, which distresses Greg since he is Jewish. Eventually, Evelyn leaves.
Without a nanny and all stressed out, Greg and his family board a plane for a vacation, but never get off the ground when news of Evelyn suddenly taking ill reaches them. At the hospital, Greg affirms to Evelyn his love for Billie. Evelyn’s counsel is not to take life’s responsibilities so seriously that you have no fun.
Some things are worth commending in the movie. As a new parent, Greg feels he has lost his freedom, yet overcomes his dilemma by facing head on the realities and responsibilities of parenting and commitments. In fact, by film’s end, Greg and Billie decide to have another baby. “After all,” says Evelyn, “isn’t that what it’s all about?”
On the other hand, there are profanities, rear male nudity and a lot of obscene sexual dirty talk. These repeated instances of obscenity revolve around jokes sprung on the unwary, followed by the response, “Just kidding!”. This brings to mind Proverbs 26:19, “Like a madman shooting firebrands or deadly arrows is a man who deceives his neighbor and says, ‘I was only joking!'” Thus explaining the obscenity as a prank is a poor excuse. The obscenities are particularly offensive in mental hallucinations Greg has with other characters, where they literally spew forth like water rushing from a geyser. Therefore, MODERN LOVE is not recommended.
