Will the NATIONAL TREASURE Series Hold the Same Pro-American Values as the Movie?

By Movieguide® Staff

Disney recently announced a new original series based in the same universe as the popular NATIONAL TREASURE movies.

According to a Disney+ press release, the series is “centered on a young heroine, Jess (Lisette Alexis), a brilliant and resourceful DREAMer who embarks on the adventure of a lifetime to uncover the truth about her family’s mysterious past and save a lost Pan-American treasure.”

The show features a familiar face, as well. Jess will go toe-to-toe with a billionaire treasure hunter, played by Academy Award-winning actress Catherine Zeta-Jones.

“Billie, [is] a…billionaire, black-market antiquities expert, and treasure hunter who lives by her own code,” Disney shared. “She transformed herself from a penniless orphan to a shrewd, stylish businesswoman and adventurer. Billie’s used to getting what she wants—and she wants the Pan-American treasure. But not just for the money. This treasure has deeper stakes for her.”

The show will also feature Zuri Reed, Jordan Rodrigues, Antonio Cipriano, and Jake Austin Walker as Jess’ friends who help her treasure hunt.

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of NATIONAL TREASURE reads:

Rated PG, NATIONAL TREASURE uses at least a couple Masonic symbols to help locate the treasure, but it avoids the occult, ritualistic, Non-Christian ideas of the Masons. Instead, the movie concentrates on honoring early American history, the Founding Fathers, the Declaration of Independence, and ideals such as liberty, traditional family values, bravery, honor, patriotism, loyalty, and justice. All in all, NATIONAL TREASURE provides loads of family-friendly fun. The actors are great, the adventure is exciting, the mystery is intriguing, the suspense is taut, and the humor is full and almost entirely squeaky clean.

Movieguide® previously reported on the series’ development:

Two NATIONAL TREASURE projects, a feature movie and Disney+ series, are in the works according to Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

“We’re certainly working on one [NATIONAL TREASURE] for streaming, and we’re working on one for the big screen,” producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Collider.

Bruckheimer added, “Hopefully, they’ll both come together, and we’ll bring you another NATIONAL TREASURE, but they’re both very active….The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept, but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.”

That means familiar faces like Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, and Jon Voight could grace the silver screen together again for NATIONAL TREASURE 3. Chris Bremner (BAD BOYS FOR LIFE) will write the screenplay.
