Jerry Bruckheimer Backs New Movie Adaptation of Classic Beyblade Toy

By Movieguide® Contributor

Big-name producer Jerry Bruckheimer, known for classics like TOP GUN and PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, recently announced plans to produce a live-action movie based on the popular Beyblade toys.

According to Deadline, there are no details on the plot of the movie, but a script is currently in the works.

The toys, a type of spinning top designed to battle other Beyblades, were created to compete with Pokemon in 1999. They quickly took off, spawning manga, anime, comics, and international TV adaptations.

Despite the movie being in the early stages of development, Paramount—the studio behind the project—is reportedly already considering the potential of a franchise.

Beyblade is far from the first upcoming movie based on a classic toy or game.

Movieguide® has previously reported on Mattel’s forthcoming project based on Barbie:

LITTLE WOMEN director Greta Gerwig has signed on to join actress Margot Robbie for Mattel’s upcoming BARBIE movie.

“It comes with a lot of baggage!” Robbie tells British Vogue. “And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”

Gerwig previously directed the 2019 version of LITTLE WOMEN, which was nominated for a Movieguide® Award.

Though Gerwig just officially joined the team, Robbie has been linked with the movie for nearly two years.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a change to be aspirational for younger kids,” Robbie told Variety in 2019.

In addition to the BARBIE movie, Mattel has other movies and television programs in the works, like Polly Pocket.

Movieguide® previously reported that Polly Pocket would come to the big screen with Lena Dunham and Lilly Collins.

According to Deadline, Mattel has several other projects in development include AMERICAN GIRL, BARBIE, BARNEY, HOT WHEELS, ROCK ‘EM SOCK ‘EM ROBOTS, THOMAS & FRIENDS, UNO, VIEWMASTER, and WISHBONE.

Movieguide® also reported on Mattel’s upcoming UNO TV show:

The family card game Uno will take the form of a television game show after toy company Mattel decided to team up with Propagate Content and LET’S MAKE A DEAL showrunner.

“Uno is the most popular game in the world and is a fixture in pop culture, making it the ideal franchise to build a reality game show” Adam Bonnett, executive producer, Mattel Television, said. “Ben [Silverman], Howard [T. Ownes], Greg [Lipstone] and John [Quinn] have deep expertise in unscripted content and are the perfect partners to help us transform Uno into a television series for the whole family.”

Ben Silverman, Howard T. Owens, and Greg Lipstone of Propagate, who produced Food Network’s CHOPPED and the survival show RUNNING WILD WITH BEAR GRYLLS, will produce alongside John Quinn, who is in charge of long-running daytime game show LET’S MAKE A DEAL.

Silverman and Owens said: “Uno is a beloved game that has been entertaining people worldwide for generations. We are excited to team with Mattel and John Quinn to translate the game for television, and think The Uno Gameshow will be perfect for family viewing.”
