STUDIO 666

STUDIO 666 is a gory horror movie spoof featuring the Grammy-winning band Foo Fighters, where the band’s founder, Dave Grohl, becomes possessed by a demon and starts killing off his five band members in gruesome fashion. STUDIO 666 has one very funny scene in the first act where pop star Lionel Richie makes a comical cameo appearance, but the rest of the movie devolves into lots of demonic-inspired blood and gore, accompanied by hard rock riffs, a sex scene and more than 200 obscenities and profanities.

The movie opens with a flashback to 1994 with an unnamed, possessed rock singer slaughtering one of his band members in a small mansion on a hill. He then commits suicide by hanging himself off a balcony.

Cut to present day, where Dave Grohl and the other Foo Fighters band members are having a discussion with their record producer about a new album. Grohl, who writes most of the band’s hard rock songs, asks their manager, Jeremy Shill, for a place to make their tenth album. Shill picks the mansion where the previous murders occurred.

When a lady realtor shows them the mansion, Dave falls in love with its acoustics. So, he convinces his five band mates, Pat, Taylor, Nate, Chris, and Rami, to join him for two weeks in the mansion while he writes the songs for the album, and they work together on the arrangement for the songs. Meanwhile, Nate becomes enticed by the beautiful black-haired widow next door.

On the first day after moving into the mansion, the band’s electrician, Krug, is electrocuted to death while plugging in their large amplifier. As the coroner takes away his body, Dave convinces the band to stay at the house to do the album and to honor Krug’s memory. However, Dave is suffering from writer’s block. He also keeps seeing a mysterious gardener dressed in black and wandering around the grounds.

One night, while the other band members are sleeping, Dave explores the mansion’s creepy basement. He finds a raccoon’s dead body that’s been stuffed and put on the wall. He also finds a large tape deck on a table. He puts a tape reel onto the deck and starts playing a demo tape from a band called Dream Widow, the band that was murdered in the first scene. While the music plays, a demonic spirit looking like ghostly smoke enters Dave’s mouth and possesses him.

The next day, Dave has conquered his writer’s block and starts writing a long hard rock song. The other band members become suspicious and disgruntled as the song stretches past the 20-minute mark. So, Demonic Dave starts murdering them one by one.

Based on a story by Dave Grohl, STUDIO 666 has one really hilarious scene where Grohl, suffering from writer’s block, starts singing the Lionel Richie hit, “Hello, It’s Me.” Suddenly, Lionel Richie appears and yells at Grohl to stop singing his song. The rest of the movie, however, is filled with mostly lame jokes and lots of demonic-inspired blood and gore. The extreme violence includes a chainsaw murder, two decapitations and cannibalism. The band and the filmmakers add some hard rock riffs and many obscenities, plus a few strong profanities. There’s also a brief sex scene between Nate and the widow next door.

Finally, STUDIO 666 has a strong occult, demonic worldview. After the first band member is murdered, the four remaining band members talk with the widow next door. She tells them about the 1994 murders. She also tells them that somewhere in the mansion’s basement, the demon-possessed murderer hid a book about the occult that has a Christian exorcism ritual in it. Eventually, [SPOILERS FOLLOW] two of the band members find the book and perform the ritual over Dave. The exorcism really seems to work at first, but the demons in the story are assisted by two Satanists who finally appear. So, the surviving band members are eventually killed, and the last scene shows that, somehow, Dave is still possessed. Thus, the ending to STUDIO 666 turns out to be abhorrent and depressing, with the demonic world winning the day.

Though he’s an anti-drug advocate, Foo Fighters founder Dave Grohl has been a long-time LGBT and gun control advocate, and supporter of loony, lying leftist politicians. So, it should be no wonder that his first fictional movie should be a demonic and abhorrent, though slightly comical, horror movie. Grohl’s former band, Nirvana, also a strong and vocal advocate for LGBT causes, disbanded in 1994 after its leader, Kurt Cobain, committed suicide.
