AND JUST LIKE THAT Pushes Hypersexual, Woke Narrative

By Movieguide® Contributor

AND JUST LIKE THAT is an American comedy-drama television series streaming on HBO Max. The series, developed by Michael Patrick King, is a revival and sequel to the HBO television series SEX AND THE CITY crated by Darren Star. It stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Wille Garson, Mario Cantone, Evan Handler, David Eigenberg, and Chris North in reprising roles from the original series, and introduces Sara Ramirez and Sarita Choudhury as new characters. The series continues to follow the story of best friends Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York Goldenblast as they navigate life, love, and lose in post-pandemic New York City.

AND JUST LIKE THAT opens in post-pandemic New York City where best-friends Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte are attempting to navigate life in their 50s. Carrie, a successful author and happily married woman, struggles with her work. As a private, some-what traditional woman, she finds it hard to open up on her joint podcast where her boss instructs her to loosen up and openly talk about her sex life. But when tragedy strikes in Carrie’s personal life, she must attempt to cope with loss and life without a key person she thought would be part of it.

Miranda, a married mother and lawyer navigates life and happiness as she goes back to college to get a master’s degree to help oppressed women. However, Miranda is deeply unhappy with her personal life and begins questioning everything about herself before making some bold decisions that may destroy her family.

Charlotte, a happily married mother of two, must navigate life with two teenage daughters, one a bright, talented piano student, the other a stubborn tomboy. But when one of her daughters makes a bold declaration, Charlotte and her husband must determine how to handle the situation in the best way possible for their daughter.

AND JUST LIKE THAT has a primarily secular, materialist, romantic worldview. Throughout the series, characters are solely focused on themselves and how to better their happiness and personal life. As a result, characters live for their own gain and pleasure. Many put value in material things such as possessions and money, others in physical pleasure and addictive substances. The characters also do not have a moral code or a sense of what is right or wrong. Rather they judge what is moral or valuable based on societal standards. As a result, many characters believe that their own happiness is the greatest value and attempt to attain this happiness at all costs, even if that means leaving their family, refusing to compromise, ignoring friends, or completely changing their personal identity or gender.

AND JUST LIKE THAT does not contain any physical violence. However there is one scene where a wife comes home to find her husband died of a heart attack. There is also some yelling/fighting between characters such as parents and children, spouses, etc. There are several brief instances of male frontal nudity (one is non-sexual) and one instance of upper female nudity. There are also a few instances of partial rear nudity (male and female). Many characters, both men and women, where revealing attire throughout the film and several characters can also be seen in bras, underwear, etc. There are lots of sex scenes throughout the series; most are rather graphic, contain partial nudity, and are of an unconventional nature. Many of these scenes take place between an LGBTQ+ couple. There are many references to and conversations about sex, public masturbation, and various types of contraceptives. One adult character wets her bed/pees into a water bottle, because she can’t get to the bathroom post-surgery and her friend/caregiver is preoccupied having sex in the kitchen. Mild swearing is common throughout the series and the Lord’s name is taken in vain. The characters regularly have cocktails and one character struggles with a drinking problem, but later gives up alcohol for good. There are a few party/club scenes and several characters do shots. One character uses prescribed post-operative narcotics, but they cause her to be a little loopy.  Another character regularly smokes weed, she claims it helps with nerves/anxiety, everywhere and anywhere including at work and in other people’s homes without their consent. The show also features a lot of lying, manipulation, divorce, and poor parenting.

AND JUST LIKE THAT heavily pushes woke and LGBTQ+ culture and inclusion throughout the series. The podcast Carrie now works on is titled “X, Y, and Me” and is hosted by a non-binary individual along with a cis-gender female (Carrie) and a cis-gender male. Featured clips from the podcast include a lot of conversations regarding specifics of the LGBTQ+ community, “Woke Moments,” and excessive sexual content. Additionally, several of the characters are gay, non-binary, and transgender. One of the leading male figures is gay and owns “Hot Fellas Bakery” where his male employees are featured in rather skimpy/provocative outfits waving around baguettes. One of the non-binary individuals is a 12-year-old girl named Rose who tells her parents she “doesn’t feel like a girl.”

Through a meeting at her school the parents discover she now identifies as non-binary and goes by the gender-neutral name “Rock” and the pronouns “they/their/them.” While her parents are shocked and slightly unhappy that the school seems to be making decisions about their daughter without their knowledge, they simply accept it as normal and acceptable. The parents even attain a transgender rabbi to perform Rock’s “Their Mitzvah.”

Another 50-year-old married woman has an affair and eventually leaves her husband and teenage son because she falls in love with a non-binary individual some 15 years younger than her. Through this relationship and many others, the show pushes the “woke” mentality of focusing on yourself and constantly changing your life to fit your personal needs without any thought to the others around you.

While the series content is more than questionable, it is a high-budget production that features beautiful architecture, fashion, and some of the finest restaurants in New York. However, while the set and filming are wonderfully done, the acting is sometimes sub-par and, at times, seems very fake. One area where the show excels is in its use of music. The production team creatively uses background music and musical performances throughout the series in such a way that enhances the plot line and draws viewers in, almost as if the music was a character itself. However, because AND JUST LIKE THAT contains immorality and worldview problems, Movieguide® finds the series to be excessive.
