Phil Robertson and Kirk Cameron Talk Faith and Careers: ‘Peace of Mind, Without God, Is Impossible’

Hollywood actor Kirk Cameron, known for early roles in classic shows like GROWING PAINS, recently took a trip to Louisiana to fish with with DUCK DYNASTY’s Phil Robertson and discuss faith, careers and family.
Robertson’s claim to fame came after the A&E show highlighted his family and his duck call business, which became a multi-million dollar venture over the course of 10 years.
Cameron discovered that the Robertson patriarch still lives on the same land and in the same house as he did when his duck call business was a secondary source of income to his fishing.
Before his duck call business took off, Robertson’s primary source of income, and food, came from fishing the river behind his property. The 75-year-old said many people would try to steal his fish, but the Lord used that to teach him a valuable lesson.
“At first I would take a shotgun and I would threaten them and I would say, ‘Don’t ever touch my nets again or I’ll kill you,” Robertson told Cameron. “As I got older in the faith, I read that text in Romans 12, ‘If your enemy is hungry feed him.’ I’m like, ‘Lord, they’re stealing my fish and you’re saying be good to them. I thought, ‘Wait a minute, I’ve never tried being good to someone who was stealing from me.”
For Robertson, God’s Word holds the ultimate authority in every area of his life, and he shared that the next time he found someone stealing from his nets, his heart toward them changed.
“[One day] there were two guys right down here, were fixing to steal my fish,” Robertson recalled as he and Cameron fished the same river he had for decades. “I ran straight at them when I got up on them, they threw the net back in the river, looking at me. I said, ‘Why are you boys stealing my fish? I’m doing this for a living. You’re taking tennis shoes and food off my table.’ I said, ‘But you’re in luck, because today you don’t have to steal. I’ll give them to you.’
“I said, ‘Gentlemen, next time you need any fish you don’t have to steal it, just come up there and say you’re not catching anything and I’ll give them to you,'” he added.
Robertson said he never regretted his obedience to God’s Word.
“The word spread up down the river that that old guy, if you ask him for some fish, he’ll give you some, you don’t have to steal them,” Robertson recalled. “They all quit stealing. I learned a valuable lesson there, just be good to them. Jesus said if they ask for your coat give them the shirt off your back, give it to them. I rock on and every time I look up I’m being blessed more and more each day.”
Despite his fortune and fame, Robertson said that the river and his relationship with God give him peace of mind.
“Peace of mind, Cameron, is the rarest of commodities,” Robertson said. “Hard to find on planet earth, without God, impossible.”

Over a meal of freshly caught catfish, Cameron asked Robertson about the current state of America and what the Robertson patriarch would change and where he would start.
“The same place they did: with faith,” Robertson responded. “Faith comes from hearing the message, the message is heard through the word of Christ. Without faith one cannot believe in God. Without faith, it’s impossible to please God. For anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and he rewards those who earnestly seek him. So I would start right there and say, ‘let me tell you about the story of Jesus.’”
“You have to show them through the way you behave,” Robertson said. “God’s people are the ones who are showing the world what Jesus is like and if we don’t do it, where else is it going to come from? If God’s people are not going to show the world around us Jesus who’s going to do it?”
“It’s hard to show them that in two hours on Sunday morning inside a church building,” Robertson continued. “They’re not inside. Where you work is where you can point them to Jesus, where you work, where you play, that’s when you show them. We now have God confined to structures with tall steeples in front of them. It’s not enough. You got to have family structures meeting together in their homes where they eat, where they play.”
