THE CROWN Will Suspend Production After the Death of Queen Elizabeth

By Movieguide® Contributor

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth, Netflix’s THE CROWN announced they will be suspending production in honor of her passing.

“As a mark of respect, filming on ‘The Crown’ was suspended today,” a spokesperson for Netflix announced. “Filming will also be suspended on the day of Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral.”=

THE CROWN is currently in the midst of filming its sixth and reportedly final season. The show follows the royal family, starting with the beginning of Queen Elizabeth’s reign in 1952.

Movieguide® previously reported on Season 6 of THE CROWN:

Netflix’s THE CROWN will get a sixth season after all.

The critically acclaimed drama, created by Peter Morgan, announced in January that the show would end with season five, stating that it’s the “perfect time and place to stop.”

However, this announcement of a sixth season goes back to Morgan’s original plan for the show to run for six seasons, following the royals into the 21st century.

Morgan said, “As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons. To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.”

Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix said, “The Crown keeps raising the bar with each new season. We can’t wait for audiences to see the upcoming fourth season, and we’re proud to support Peter’s vision and the phenomenal cast and crew for a sixth and final season.”

The last season of THE CROWN will lead into the early 2000s.

Some episodes of THE CROWN have been nominated for Movieguide® Awards, and Season 2’s “Vergangenheit” and Season 3’s “Bubbikins” both received favorable reviews. However, other episodes were ultimately too progressive.

Fans of the show hope that the upcoming seasons will return to stories that show the queen and her family’s strong Christian faith.
