Disney Announces Release Dates for Live-Action SNOW WHITE, THE LION KING Sequel

By Movieguide® Staff

Disney recently announced release dates and changes in scheduling to their slate of upcoming blockbuster movies, like a future STAR WARS movie, ROGUE SQUADRON, and a live-action SNOW WHITE adaptation.

Not surprisingly, Disney removed ROGUE SQUADRON, which was previously scheduled for Dec. 22, 2023, and was taken off the production schedule in 2021.

However, Disney confirmed a Mar. 22, 2024 release date for their live-action remake of SNOW WHITE, starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.

Movieguide® previously reported on the upcoming SNOW WHITE movie:

Following the success of previous reimaginings of classic stories like THE LION KING, THE JUNGLE BOOK, and ALADDIN, Disney is pressing forward with their next venture, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARVES.

WONDER WOMAN actress Gal Gadot will star as the Evil Queen in the remake of the 1938 Disney staple.

Walt Disney would change the course of animated movies forever with the release of SNOW WHITE, the first full-length cell-animated feature to debut in theaters across the United States.

Movieguide®’s review of the original SNOW WHITE reads:

A beautiful young woman oppressed by a wicked Queen dreams that one day her prince will take her away to a life of happiness in Walt Disney’s animated masterpiece, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS. Although many are concerned about the film’s portrayal of witchcraft which God condemns, it must be noted that the witchcraft is shown to be evil which can only be overcome by true love. This storyline can be a discussion starter to explore the concept of God’s love overcoming evil when the Prince of Peace rescues His Bride from the clutches of the adversary.

Actress Rachel Zegler will play the future Disney princess. The movie will also feature music, written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the Oscar- and Tony-winning duo who worked on LA LA LAND, THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, and DEAR EVAN HANSEN.

Disney also confirmed INSIDE OUT 2 (Jun. 14, 2024), and THE LION KING (2019) sequel MUFASA (Jul. 5, 2024).

Movieguide® honored both INSIDE OUT and THE LION KING (2019) at the annual Movieguide® Awards as some of the Best Movies for Families for their respective release years.

A portion of movieguide®’s review of THE LION KING (2019) reads:

THE LION KING is a technologically innovative live-action remake of Disney’s classic 1994 animated movie. Simba, a lion in line for the throne of Pride Rock, has to learn to grow up and save the ones he loves. After his father Mufasa dies in a stampede, Simba flees his homeland and embraces a simpler life devoid of responsibility. Back at Pride Rock, Simba’s evil Uncle Scar reigns as the new king, but conditions in the kingdom are bleak. Simba’s childhood friend sets out for help and finds Simba, whom she thought was dead. Now, Simba must decide whether to challenge his uncle or keep living a selfish life free from worry.

THE LION KING is very well produced, with amazing graphics and stunning images of African scenery. It’s very much like the original animated movie, pretty much scene for scene. It also has the same great music. THE LION KING has a strong moral, redemptive worldview extolling sacrifice and honor. However, there is some pagan mysticism and scary scenes of animals fighting each other. So, the new LION KING merits caution for younger children.
