PEANUTS MOVIE Sequel Teased By Comic Creator’s Son

Craig Schulz, son of “Peanuts” creator Charles Schulz, is hopeful that the iconic comic strip will return to the big screen soon.

“Nothing is off the table,” Schulz told Screen Rant. “We’re always exploring different ideas and different things in this co-view series that we’ve done, which touched upon the environment, the love for teachers, Mother’s Day, and how it interacts with enough people.”

“All those subjects are just really fun, and as you know, the Peanuts universe is sort of endless. There are so many great characters to work with, there’s so many great themes to work with that we explore everything, and I don’t know that a movie is off the table,” he continued.

“I would like to see one come back, but keep your fingers crossed, we will see,” he added.

Charlie Brown was last on the movie screen in 2015 with the widely acclaimed THE PEANUTS MOVIE. This movie stayed true to the comics, promoting a variety of moral themes. A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE PEANUTS MOVIE is one of the best family movies in recent years! The 3D animation is beautiful and inventive, yet still feels old fashioned. Fans won’t be disappointed. Most refreshing is the movie’s positive Christian, redemptive, moral worldview as Charlie is rewarded for being compassionate, honest, selfless, and brave. The message is so on the nose and avoids nuance, that nearly every child will understand the movie’s message. In this way, it honors the original comic strip. There is some slapstick comedy and imaginative peril in some scenes in THE PEANUTS MOVIE.

Schulz’s excitement for the potential of a new movie came as a new Charlie Brown special released on AppleTV+. While Movieguide® has yet to review this special, Snoopy has previously been seen on AppleTV+ with THE SNOOPY SHOW, which also promoted strong moral themes.

The Peanuts characters have remained a staple of pop culture and childhood since the comic was first released in the ’60s. The cross-generational popularity of the characters is largely based on the moral themes they promote.

As newer adaptations have stayed true to the comic’s roots, keeping clean, kid-friendly content at the forefront, a sequel to THE PEANUTS MOVIE will succeed if it follows this precedent.

Movieguide® previously reported:

SNOOPY IN SPACE is rated TV-G. The content is wholly acceptable for children and families. The series also reflects a biblical moral worldview that emphasizes love, loyalty, and the importance of friends helping and encouraging one another. Snoopy and Woodstock often help, protect, and stand up for one another during astronaut training and assignments. Snoopy also shows love and loyalty to a brokenhearted Charlie Brown by showing the boy that the beagle missed Charlie while away on a mission. Charlie Brown and friends also try to cheer up Snoopy when he is sad.

SNOOPY IN SPACE has other redemptive elements. The series stresses the importance of hard work and not taking shortcuts. Snoopy learns that he cannot cheat his way into becoming an astronaut. He studies and trains so he can achieve his dream. SNOOPY IN SPACE also highlights not getting discouraged while learning something new and challenging.
