AI, Anime to Dominate Kids’ Entertainment, Analysts Report

Ivan Colecchia, senior VP of business development at analytics firm The Insights Family, recently shared what his company believes will dominate kids entertainment.

“The global take-over of anime, a cinema renaissance amongst kids, the rise in popularity of popular Asian culture, like K-Pop boy bands, AI, customized content, and an increased income from toys related to favorite shows were the main talking points for Colecchia,” Variety reported.

He offered this insight on Oct. 13 at MIPJunior, a two-day annual conference that gathers members from industries related to kids’ entertainment.

Streaming services have certainly picked up on the anime trend. CBR reported that Netflix created its first original anime in 2014 and has since only tried to grow its anime library year by year, with Hulu following in its footsteps.

Movieguide® previously reported on the problems with anime’s popularity:

While Japanese animation—known in the United States as anime—is not new to American audiences, gone are the days of relatively harmless series geared toward children, such as 1967’s SPEED RACER.

In recent years, anime has been at the forefront of depicting edgy content that blurs the lines of morality with occult worldviews, sensual content and extreme violence.

Colecchia also talked about how AI will impact kids entertainment.

He said, “97% of kids aged 13-18 are aware of AI. If 97% are aware of it, how many are using it: 85% globally. In some countries, 90% are using it to generate content, even, or shape music.”

“AI has simplified homework and contributed to a growing need for simplicity, spoon-fed answers and personalization. Customization and AI. That’s my message today. Think about that,” he said.

He also puts forth that kids have visited movie theaters a lot more in recent years. This will lead to more toy sales.

“It means there’s a new way to develop different properties…For young fans, seeing their favorite characters in a film leads to more licensing opportunities around the world,” he said.

CNN reported on the recent toy sale increase after the release of the BARBIE movie: “Barbie toy sales in the US increased 25% for the July-August combined months compared to the same two-month period a year ago.”
