‘Without Him, I’m Nothing’: UFC Fighter Declares Christ’s Power in His Life

By Movieguide® Contributor

After a big UFC win in Mexico City, Brian Ortega declared Christ’s power in his life and shared how finding the Lord has helped him overcome a series of difficult situations.

“First off, I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Without Him, I’m nothing,” Ortega said while still in the octagon. “I love my fearless church out there. Guys, God will bless you in front of the same wicked people who try to break you. God is great. God is good.”

Following the fight, Ortega detailed how God came into his life and saved him from a dark place.

“It’s been rough for [a while]. I lost one of my best friends. I lost two friends after that. I got betrayed by people that were close to me. I had four surgeries back-to-back-to-back. Just lots of things in my personal life, and it looked dark,” he told Christhlete following his win.

“And I know, I know a lot of people think it’s cheesy or whatever, but I went to church. I found God. And a year ago, I was a broken man and not today. I’m married, [and] I’ve got my kids with me. God gave me my family back and look at us, we’re doing good.”

Ortega’s win came after a pre-fight ankle injury that jeopardized his ability to compete. However, when faced with this difficult moment, he trusted in God rather than letting fear win.

“Right when they were introducing us, I jumped up and I rolled my ankle. I freaked out,” Ortega said. “I knew that God is good and God will protect me but in the first round, it didn’t feel that way.”

Choosing to stay in the fight ended up being a good decision, as Ortega won his first fight after returning from a shoulder injury that had kept him sidelined since 2022.

Movieguide® previously reported on the intersection of faith and the UFC:

In a sport with few outspoken Christians, Iranian-American UFC fighter Beneil Dariush is confident about his faith and uses his platform to share the gospel with the world.

In a recent interview with CBN, Dariush shared why he is outspoken about his faith and how he reconciles fighting with Jesus’ teachings.

Dariush came to know the Lord when he was 22.

“The thing that drew me to Him was Him…[you] read the scriptures and [see] that He didn’t have the brokenness and all the things that I have that I know are wrong…and then on top of that he is willing to give up his life for us.”
