THE FIRST OMEN

"Graphic Horror Prequel, Slightly Rebooted"

What You Need To Know:

THE FIRST OMEN is a prequel to THE OMEN, the popular 1976 supernatural horror movie, which depicts the supposed Antichrist as a malevolent 5-year-old boy. In the new movie, the Roman Catholic Church transfers Maggie, a young American woman, to an orphanage in Rome to finish her training as a nun. Maggie grows concerned about a troubled 14-year-old girl at the orphanage, who’s being punished by the older priests and nuns. A mysterious defrocked priest, Father Brennan, approaches Maggie and tells her about a warped conspiracy that has to do with nothing less than the birth of the Antichrist and The Beast from the Book of Revelation. The movie gets wilder from there.

THE FIRST OMEN has many jump scares and some gruesome scares. However, the story is rather silly and doesn’t bring anything really new to the horror sub-genre of fighting the Devil and Satanist conspiracies or stopping the coming of the Antichrist. Also, THE FIRST OMEN has two disturbing, gruesome birth scenes and disturbing scenes where a Satanist cabal summons a demon or Satan himself to impregnate a young woman.

Dominant Worldview and Other Worldview Content/Elements:
Sex and satanism occult worldview where there’s a conspiracy with Satan to impregnate young women and create the Antichrist (some of the pregnancies apparently result in deformed babies or female births, so the conspirators just impregnate other females), the conspirators are double minded (they hope that by helping to bring the Antichrist into the world they can use fear of the Antichrist to bring people back to the Roman Catholic Church, one woman has 666 on the upper roof of her mouth, and another woman has 666 on her head under her hair, and the movie has an Anti-Catholic stance toward leaders of the Roman Catholic Church, but an excommunicated priest and a neophyte nun oppose the conspiracy because of their strong faith, but there’s a twist;

Foul Language:
No obscenities and four light profanities such as OG and OMG;

Violence:
Some very strong, gruesome violence and intense scary violence such as a man performs a Caesarian scalpel cut on woman’s pregnant belly and reaches his hands inside to pull out the placenta with the baby inside, and then removes the baby from the placenta, young nun sets fire to herself and then jumps and hang herself of a rope while her corpse burns, dead young nun’s burned body appears to another young woman, young woman sees other scary visions of people, young woman watches another birth scene, and the doctor and nuns serving as nurses pull out a clawed demon baby, image of back of Roman Catholic priest’s head with a bloody slice of his head and brain taken off, some photos of deformed babies shown, and woman is forced and strapped onto a table, a hood placed over her head and a demon or Satan with claws climbs on top of her (sex implied);

Sex:
Implied sex with a demon or Satan (movie never says specifically; see previous note on violence);

Nudity:
Young woman’s pregnant belly is shown and there’s another image of a birth where a 14-year-old girl has her legs spread during another birth scene, but it turns out to be a vision;

Alcohol Use:
Two young women in a program to become a nun visit dance club in 1971 before their confirmation ceremony and drink (it’s implied that one of the women got drunk);

Nuns smoke in one scene, and there’s smoking in one or two other scenes; and,

Miscellaneous Immorality:
Young woman sneaks into a Catholic official’s office and into a secret room where she takes some files of experiments with trying to birth the supposed Antichrist.

More Detail:

THE FIRST OMEN is a prequel to THE OMEN, the popular 1976 supernatural horror movie that depicted the supposed Antichrist as a malevolent 5-year-old boy. In the new movie, the Roman Catholic Church transfers a young American woman named Maggie to an orphanage in Rome to finish her training as a nun. She becomes concerned about a troubled 14-year-old girl at the orphanage, Carlita, who’s being strictly punished by the older priests and nuns. Scary supernatural visions and events seem to accompany this girl and Maggie. A mysterious defrocked priest named Brennan approaches Maggie and tells her about a warped conspiracy in the Catholic Church that has to do with nothing less than the birth of the Antichrist and The Beast from the Book of Revelation. The movie gets wilder from there.

THE FIRST OMEN has a lot of jump scares and some gruesome scares. However, the story is rather silly and doesn’t bring anything really new to the horror sub-genre of fighting the Devil and Satanist conspiracies or stopping the coming of the Antichrist.

Christians have a variety of theories about the Antichrist and related figures such as the “man of sin” in 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 and the Beast from the Abyss and from the Sea in Chapters 11-13 of the Book of Revelation. The man of sin and the Beast are not specifically tied to the description of antichrist and the “spirit of antichrist” found in 1 John 2:18-23. That hasn’t stopped Christians down through the centuries, from the Early Church Fathers to modern times, from linking these passages together.

Movies like THE FIRST OMEN, or ROSEMARY’S BABY and LEFT BEHIND movies, may attract good business by capitalizing on people’s fears about this topic. However, one of the most common themes in the whole Bible is how many times that God or Jesus tell people to “Fear not.”

The biggest problems with THE FIRST OMEN are its two disturbing, gruesome birth scenes and disturbing scenes where a Satanist cabal summons a demon or Satan himself to impregnate a young woman. The movie also seems to have a negative view of organized religion, especially the Roman Catholic hierarchy.
