ZOOTOPIA 2 is the highest performing Hollywood movie to ever hit China’s box office.
“The box office success of our branded IP also generates value across our interconnected businesses, with hits like ZOOTOPIA 2 lifting viewership of related titles on Disney+ and fueling global interest in our parks and consumer products,” said CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston. “This franchise is also an important driver of attendance at Shanghai Disneyland with our Zootopia-themed land – one of the most popular areas of the park.”
The movie has made nearly $1.8 billion in the global box office, one of three titles to cross the billion-dollar mark for Disney in 2025, Deadline reported this week.
According to Forbes, ZOOTOPIA 2 has sold over 100% more in tickets in the territory than its previous ticket record holder, AVENGERS: ENDGAME.

China’s best performing movie ever was the animated movie NE ZHA 2, which made an impressive $2.12 billion. Before the NE ZHA movies, ZOOTOPIA was the biggest animated movie ever in the country.
Wisely, Disney used popular Chinese actors to dub ZOOTOPIA 2 and heavily marketed the movie. The sequel starred Ji Guanlin and Chang Chen, as well as newcomers Da Peng, Fei Xiang (aka) Christian Rand Phillips, Jin Chen and Wang Anyu.
This year is Year of the Wood Snake in China, so Disney played on that to market the new movie and its new snake character.
The Christian Science Monitor reported that Chinese fans have flocked to see the movie. Many enthusiastic fans have even brought their dogs or other pets to the showings.
“I really liked the first one, so when the second one came out, I wanted to bring my child,” said Zhang Rui, a telecommunications company worker who saw the movie with her 6-year-old daughter. “Everyone watched the first movie, then went to Disneyland to play at [Zootopia], and is now watching the sequel.”
China Eastern Airlines even debuted a “Disney-Zootopia Express” plane themed after the movies.
Forbes said Chinese audiences fell in love with Judy Hopps’ mission to leave her farm and work in the big city, even though her family was afraid for her. The movie shows how rural people are hardworking, overcome prejudices and learn to adapt to their new environments.
The ZOOTOPIA 2 post-credits teaser shared that ZOOTOPIA 3 will highlight the avian part of its animal world. The threequel is expected to come out in 2030 at the soonest, but it could be as late as 2035.
