Why These HGTV Stars Practice Uplifting ‘Bucket-Filling’ With Their Family
By Movieguide® Contributor
Jenny and Dave Marrs are sharing a sweet exercise their family does to lift each other up — they call it “bucket-filling.”
Jenny shared a video of her family engaging in the activity on Feb. 16. Everyone wrote something positive about someone else and takes turns reading it out loud.
“Little snippets from my favorite Valentine’s tradition…we laughed a lot because sarcasm is the fabric of our family’s love language (Dave wrote and read a card to himself 😆) and we shared words of truth and encouragement and love,” the FIXER TO FABULOUS star wrote. “Everyone read a card written by each person in our family answering the simple question: What I love about you. 🤍”
“I call it ‘bucket-filling’ – we all need our buckets filled by the words and actions others,” she continued. “There’s no way we can pour ourselves out in service and love if our own buckets aren’t first filled to the brim.”
Jenny noted that she takes her role as bucket-filler seriously, as a wife and a mom.
“I’ve always believed my most important role on this earth is the be the bucket filler for Dave and our kiddos,” she said. “Being their mom is my greatest achievement and responsibility and I sure hope that one day they’ll look back on these nights around our table and feel the confident assurance of being deeply, deeply loved.”

Jenny elaborated on the bucket-filling event in another post:
Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year because of this tradition we started a few years ago. I set out a stack of notecards and a jar for each person in our family and we all take some time before dinner to write to one another. Then, we have dinner together as a family and, as we sit around the table, we take turns reading the words of encouragement, humor and love written about us out loud.
This is the simplest thing and is one of my absolute favorite nights of the year. It’s not fancy or curated to be “instagram-photo-worthy”, it’s just a real way to love my people well.
I wanted to share because I think tonight’s the perfect night to tell the people you care most about just how special they are. Words hold so much power. Maybe you can start a new tradition too. 💕
The Marrses have a few other favorite holiday traditions, too.
“Tradition is really big in our family,” Dave previously shared. “We want to always be home with our kids. On Christmas Day, our parents and all of the family — they’re all welcome. Anyone is welcome to come, but we stick to that tradition of being home on Christmas morning.”
“We have a tradition of getting a picture at the top of the stairs. It drives me nuts, but they have to sit at the top of the stairs until Jenny gets all of her pictures, and then they can run down,” he said. “But it’s stuff that we did when we were children that still means a lot to us, and I hope that it is instilling in them some of those memories that they’ll hold on to and hopefully take to their families.”
The Marrs’ show, FIXER TO FABULOUS, is currently going strong with its sixth season on HGTV. A new episode just released yesterday, and another will release next Tuesday.
